Some of you might appreciate this. Machinist's Workshop magazine tested penetrants for break out torque on rusted nuts. They are below, as forwarded by an ex-student and professional machinist, Bud Baker. They
arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.

*Penetrating oil ..... Average load*

None ...................... 516 pounds

WD-40 ................... 238 pounds

PB Blaster ............... 214 pounds

Liquid Wrench ......... 127 pounds

Kano Kroil .............. 106 pounds

ATF-Acetone mix.......53 pounds

The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this one particular test. Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price.

SINCE ED'S RED IS acetone and atf, plus a couple other items, maybe it would works as well or nearly as well.

Coca-Cola

I wish they had tested Coca-Cola. I once used it with good results after a couple of days of soaking with Break Free and Kroil and heating and beating but I can't know if the Coke was just the straw that broke the camel.

I'D STAY AWAY FROM THE BRAKE FLUID. it is a water absorbing fluid......asking for rust anywhere you use it.

coke is a strong acid.....somewhere around a 3 on the ph scale.

Mike,
You have not been in the business of removing as many broken bolts as I have.
I wasn't born yesterday and know how to handle it.

Damn! You learn a lot on this forum. ATF as a release sounds gooder & cheaper than the branded stuff. Good lube some places too, I hear.

Incidentally, I always thought nut busters were those blonde cheerleaders at high school proms that put you down when you ask for a dance. :D

butch,
i mis-read the statement...thinking acetone and brake fluid.

even with atf and brake fluid, i'd want good cleanup to not start more rust.

as to how has busted more bolts and nuts......hmmmmmmmmm
didn't we decide we were about the same age ? and i started around 15...
but i'll leave the titile of master nut buster to you....lol.

Thanks for posting that.
Removing old rusty barrels, I sat on a cheater bar on the action wrench and then hit the wrench with a 20 pound hammer. Nothing gives. I add a few drops of Kroil, sit, and smack, and off it comes. Everyone who saw this demonstration became a Kroil consumer. Up until now, I always worried that my unscientific demo was selling snake oil.

If they didn't test "Marvel's Mystery Oil" then they missed a bet.
