Does anyone have a link as to where i could find some number and letter punches for my barrels? I also assume that punching a barrel with a small stamp is ok? thanks lee

Wayne, I agree. I just use 1/2" x 1-3/4" file folder lables. Not fancy but it gets the job done and these are all my barrels.
As Skeet may not know, a pantograph does the most professional job. Hammer and stamp, some folks claim it transfers to the bore, but I've never been able to detect that.

FWIW Jerry Stiller saw a barrel I had that came with a gun one time and remarked that in his opinion the stamping of barrels introduced an undesirable, uneven stress.

Thats what i was concerned with. i just wasnt sure punching stamps on a new barrel was the best idea there ever was. on the other hand, i didnt know if it would be just fine. Good idea on the label maker. Heck, i can get one of those at wally world. Thanks Lee

I bought an etching kit after Jim Borden explained how punching transfers thru the barrel. I tend to lissen when Jim speaks......

Reduced Stress Stamps

If you Have to stamp, these are considered the lowest stress of any stamping. I don't think there is any way a stamp of any kind can produce a "stress free" letter.

We use the below in our piping to identify the welders that worked on that particular piece and these work pretty good. Now our piping is not rifle barrels either.

Round face - Dot design characters Round face - Dot design characters

The cutting edge of the character is 1/32" radius, with a 40 degree bevel. For use in aircraft, missile, oil supply and nuclear power industries and other applications where lowest stress impressions are critical. Round face - dot design eliminates risk of fracture from too sharp an impression. Character indentification and size, three thumb groove
