Novice wanting to shoot IR50 Sporter. Rest and Bag recommendation.

I am a complete novice to BR. I picked up a Savage-Anschutz 54 Sporter this fall and would like to acquire a rest and bags to shoot IR50 Sporter. Off my bench in the back field, I can shoot .3-.4" 5-shot groups at 50 yards with the rifle with a cheap plastic K-zone rest and CCI SV ammo. I know it can do better with a good rest, bags and match ammo.

Budget: <$500 for front rest and bags.

For the front rest I’m considering a Caldwell Rock BR Competition or possibly a Bald Eagles Rest. I am totally open to other recommendations.

Bags: What make and model bags for front and rear would you recommend? Would you go with all leather, leather with coruda center strip, or full cordura? NOTE: I have a Protektor #1 Small Owl Ear front bag I (all leather) I use for shooting my Contender pistol that may work. Other brands to consider?

Here’s a link to the Protektor bags: http://protektormodel.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1

Thank you, Keith

Keith,
If your dead set on <$500 then I would look at the Greenlaw E rest with his adjustable top. I would recommend the adjustable top anyways so that you wouldn't need a separate setup for a 3 in forearm. That's just me.
But the best advise I can give you is save another $250 & get a Randolph with the adjustable top. It will save you money in the long run cause sooner or later that's what you'll end up with. Trust me.

Cowan rest

I think the best rest for the money is made by Joe Cowan. Actually his students make them and they're sold to folks on a waiting list at the end of the semester. It was around $350 I think when I bought mine 3 or 4 years ago.

The good news is you can get your money back out of it when you buy the Randolph rest like Keith said that you should have bought to start with...but it's a good rest to start with.

The e-mail address I have is:

Personal preference is an interesting thing. I started out with a simple R. W. Hart Competitive base and top. The top was not windage adjustable and so I upgraded to the now defunct Fudd Top by Mountain Specialties (similar to the Greenlaw Adjustable Bag Windage Top linked below). The Randolph rest that Keith mentioned is among the most popular rests and of high quality but I actually prefer my old Hart/Fudd rest. I've never felt handicapped by it and I'm just so familiar with it that it's like second nature to me. A Hart or Bald Eagle base with the Greenlaw top would be close to your budget. With the Greenlaw you would not need to worry about a bag for the front rest. For the rear, get a Edgewood Minigator rear bag with a couple of rear bag spacers and you will be all set. The Edgewood is a one and done purchase. If you go with the Hart or Bald Eagle get the Sinclair Speed Screw which goes on the leg facing you and makes micro elevation adjustments fast and easy.

I've done all the work for you, all you need to do is whip out your credit card

For the Bald Eagle rest you will want the cast iron. The heavier, the better.

Thanks all ...

I ordered a BE1006 (slingshot, cast iron with windage adjust top) for $199 plus shipping. Hope this will be a decent starter for a novice. Later I might add the Greenlaw adjustable top.

Still working on sorting out what rear bag to order. I plan to phone Protektor customer service to discuss their recommendation for a custom bag for my Savage-Anschutz 54 Sporter for use with IR50 ... I'm thinking a custum Dr. Bag with 3M material ears.
