Check out Brownell's for Jerry Kuhneisen's (spelling ?) excellent books. He has books on the Colt 1911, S&W revolvers, Ruger revolvers, Colt revolvers.

Basically a revolver is correctly timed when the cylinder advances, locks into the cylinder detent before the hammer is all the way back. This is greatly simplified but that's it in a nutshell.

Jerry Miculek has an excellent DVD called Trigger Job that shows complete evaluation disassembly and tune-up including timing of the Smith & Wesson revolver. This is by far the best how to gun smithing video I've seen.
