Noob… reducing a barrel tenon ?

How would you chuck a chambered 22LR barrel w/ a cone breech so as to reduce an 0.868" tenon to the desired 0.707" Ø ?

If you are planning on fitting that barrel to another action you have more important considerations than just tenon diameter. More important is headspace and bolt face to barrel end clearance.

Otherwise just chuck it up, closely, use a dial indicator to align the chamber bore and the muzzle bore.

If this action does not support a coned breech, then it would be necessary to cut off the existing tenon and refit the entire barrel.

If I were to trim down the cylinder of a barrel:

Grab the tennon in a collet (or chuck if that's all I had) Support the crown in the tailstock.

If it's a long whippy bugger stick a steady rest in the middle.

Work towards the chuck and just use good sense with speeds/feeds. If it starts to chatter and squeal either back off the speed or increase the feed rate.

Should be fine though as you are working with the strongest part of the barrel only a couple inches from the chuck.

I wouldn't run over 1000 rpm, probably closer to 750.

Give the outside a touch with an indicator prior to turning just to make sure it's not skipping rope on ya. If it's less than .005" I'd just run it.

Hope this helps.

chad i think he is talking about turning the tenon. you are talking about turning the barrel.

Based on the final diameter he wants, I'd think he's fitting a barrel to a Sako Finnfire so he won't be concerned about headspace and shoulder too much since it's a clamp in action.
I'd indicate the barrel in a 4 jaw chuck with range rods with the proper size bushings in the bore, then turn the tenon to the desired diameter. It;s important to get a snug slip fit on the tenon with these actions so you don't over stress the clamp fit.

Thanks all for your replies. It is indeed for a SAKO P94S with the two clamping bolts. Decided to chuck the muzzle end (cut for a tuner) and live center the breech end, trueing w/ a dial indicator to make the 0.080" cut.

Thanks again.

Couple of considerations;

When you run a center in the bore you can damage the crown. Check crown condition when you finish, or better, recrown it while you have the barrel out.

Other consideration, "range rods", when you indicate off them you are indicating on a location outside the bore. Always indicate in the bore itself, that is where the bullet goes.
