Nightforce CH Reticle Advice?

After a bit of wrestling with self, I'm glad to say I've been able to justify joining the Nightforce ranks.

Looks like their BR series will work best for me. 12x42 for 600 and some 1000 yard bench shooting. I was pleased to see them offering the CH reticles now in the BR series.

My problem is I don't have any easy way to actually view these reticles in person, much less see them under some strong mirage... My once perfect eyesight has slipped quite a bit in the last 10 years. I know these are fine crosshairs, but I'd hate to end up with something that disappears in the soup.

Dan Lilja is pretty close, but he doesn't stock the CH3, nor was he very anxious to order one in without a commitment from me to take it. His opinion was that it would be too fine for tough conditions.

I was hoping for some advice from shooters who have used these CH reticles. I see that the CH1 & 2 reticles are a little heavier, but I really like the idea of the small unconnected dot. Any of you with less than perfect eyesight have any help for me?

Thanks, Dick

I can't help you with an opinion on a crosshair reticle, but,
I've been shooting Nightforce BR double dot reticle the last 5 years
at 1000 yds, and see no reason to use anything else.

Thanks for the replies -

Alf - I thought the CH might allow for repeatable hold-off when necessary.

Mike - I understand you don't like dots from previous posts. Do you find the crosshair size comfortable under max power and heavy mirage? How good is your vision?

If it qualifies my opinion, I'll say first that I'm not a specialized BR shooter, but a varmint hunter. I also wear glasses.

I have owned/tried the CH3, but found that it's extremely fine .030moa lines were just rediculous. And for me, the dot wondered within the gap from centering lines.
The CH2 would be great except for the .2moa dot(too large).
The CH1 is rational at .036moa, and works well for any shooting. I still believe there is no better aiming aid than a standard crosshair. It is self centering and the human eye just can't do anything funny with it.

So I have the CH1 on 3 NXS NF scopes, and exactly the same size reticle on 2 older Premeir Leupold Mk4s. Unfortunately Leupold custom does not offer this 'medium-fine' reticle, and that is the only reason I put up with heavy Nightforce scopes of late.

Ok Mike, great feedback. I was very curious about the practical difference between the .030 and .036 hairs and how well the 1/8th min dot would show up. I don't suppose it would help much to illuminate the dot huh?

Anybody else?

Hayseed,

advise is great, however, ultimately, it will be up to your eyes to determine what they prefer.

Edwin, I don't think truer words were ever spoken. I may have to drive to Orofino before I can make a decision.
