Hey all,

I am looking to get into some benchrest shooting (and maybe some competitions) and need to know what the best way would be to go about it and also some tips. Currently I have a new CZ 452 Trainer scoped, front and rear sand bags and can shoot .5 - 1" groups at close to 50 yds using Aguila Golden Eagle ammo. What I would like to know is, is what I have now OK to shoot competition with? If not what do I need and what can I do to improve.

Also, I live in Northeast Tennessee and do not know of any competitions in the area or many places to buy equipment, can someone help me out?

I don't shoot rimfire BR, and can't tell you where the closest place to shoot it is, but Gallatin,Tn has monthly cenerfire matches and a good group of guys, myself included, that would be happy to help get you started in centerfire. --Mike Ezell

Take a drive up to Bristol for their PSL shoot look over the equipment and talk to some of the competitors........they will be able to point you
in a direction. The shoot is well advertised on this site.

Newbie,
I live in Bluff City. We shoot IR50-50 at Eunaka in Johnson City and Sparta, NC and Wilkesboro, NC. I f you would like to give me a call, my number is 423-383-3111. There will be a PSL match next Saturday where you can get a lot of info on equipment.

I live in Bristol and as Pepper said we are currently setting up dates to shot more matches at Unaka Rod and Gun Club in Johnson City. We usually car pool to other matches give us a call and maybe we can help out. If you want to give me a call my number is 423-306-4319. I'm the range master at Unaka and we are just getting started (had our first match on the 16th). There is several very good shooters in the area that would be more than glad to help you anyway they could. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks guys, there seems to be a consensus to just visit the ranges and talk to people. I have considered joining Unaka Rod and Gun for a while now and will probably do so in the next few weeks (when finances allow). I would love to attend the PSL match next Saturday but unfortunately I have a wedding that I have to be in that afternoon. At the Jim's, I will definitely be in touch, I am looking forward to getting started (not that I need any more new addictions).

You don’t know how lucky you are, I’d give my right arm to be able to come over and shoot with Mr. Pepper and the rest of the guys (well left arm, I need the right one).

Listen to what these guys have to say and watch them shoot, you won’t go far wrong.

I'm going to recommend you start local matches similar to this: http://www.vintagebenchrest.com/.

Vintage benchrest is a "run whut you brung" match and the rifle you have can be competitive.

I also think you should travel to some matches, otherwise you'll never understand how formal benchrest is shot. The home page of this web site has links to all the sanctioning organizations, too, and you should read through their rules.
