Hello everyone, I am very interested in doing some target shooting, but being very new and not knowing where to even start I am here with many questions :)
let me start off by saying i dont even know where i would go locally to find any kind of community for this kind of thing. I can tell you i have always loved shooting rifles, and since here in Canada the restrictions on hand guns are thick enough to "choke a horse" as the saying goes :) handguns is out for me, which is fine cause i enjoy rifles more anyway. I remember bring just a little boy with my lever action BB gun laying down on my front lawn shooting the stems of the christmas lights (the part where the light bulb screws in to, with out hitting the bulb itself lol ) off the top of the line and working my way down, boy that used to get me in so much trouble lmao :) but what else was a boy in the country to do? ; )
so here it is 18+ years later and i have very limited shooting experience but i really want to get in to it, i think there are a few gun clubs around here, i gotta find them over the next days.

Anyways im getting a bit off track, so many questions :( so heres a bunch and im sure ill come up with more as we speak :)

Rate of twist, i see a lot of different numbers out there, and for target shooting, which i do plan on doing competitively if i can find a community for it here or with in a reasonable drive. so what should i be looking for? i understand the basics that the rate of twist is the speed the bullet spins, either right or left, other than that i dont know much, faster rate of twist means more accurate?

Barrel length, again seeing a lot of numbers and shapes and sizes, i love the look of the Savage arms Mark-II(FV) just wish it was stainless like Mark-II (FSS) i see a lot of places sell a heavy target barrel, what does that do?

.22 LR or .22WMR which is the standard for competition?

and im sure this last question is going to cause a lot of problems as everyone has their own opinion, but what would be a good rifle to look in to? I understand that a lot of people have high end rifles, so lets look at the cheaper ones, or maybe Manufacturer. Ruger, Savage, CZ there are so many brands of rifles, i would love something cheap that i can build on over time.

oh and one last thing, what kind of action is the standard in target shooting? Bolt action i assume?

well thanks for any help, and looking forward to entering this wonderful sport.

Chris.

Chris, .22LR, probably either a 1-16 or 1-17 twist, bolt guns, most are purpose built custom guns, you might look at the classifieds here for ideas on a decent used rig. Where are you in Can?

I live on the east coast, in Nova Scotia.

1 /16 1 / 17 twist, what does that mean exactly? and how does it impact the accuracy of the rifle ?

Bullet makes one rotation in 16". I'd say use the search function here and/or go back and look at previous threads to get a flavor for what goes on.

Hi Chris,

For a first gun that's decent for target shooting without getting into the top end target rifles, I'd suggest the CZ 452 or 453 Varmint in .22LR with a Weaver V24 scope on it... The CZ Varmint is a good accurate gun with an excellent reputation and for the money, you will not be disappointed by it. And its also good for a bit of plinking and pest control as well if need be... Its a do anything bolt action gun and one you will enjoy for years to come...

Happy shooting,
Mitch & Shadow...
