Newbie question - Leupold Mk4 35x reticle

Good morning,

I think I know the answer to this but figured I'd try before I purchase a used scope. I found a used Leupold Mk4 that's been boosted to 35x by Premier Reticles. The fine reticle and dot however is too fine for the shooting I do. Any hope of finding someone to do a reticle change? Or should I just forget it and look into a current model Leupold Competition instead? Supposedly people like the turrets and other things about the older Mk4's quite a bit so that's why I figured I'd ask first. I hear the names Siebert, Ackerman, and Tucker thrown out there but there seems to be a lot of conflicting information. Thanks!

If you are worried about warranty, a new Leupold is the only way to go.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Leupold warranty is voided by work
done on the scope by any other party.

Warranty is secondary to me as long as there is SOMEONE out there that can work on the reticle or other parts. Looking at it as a long term investment.

Wally Siebert passed away a couple of years ago, so obviously he's not doing scope work anymore. T.K Lee, Ackerman, or Cecil Tucker would be your best bet.

Thank you! So no Siebert....TK Lee's site specifically says no Leupold Mk4's so that's out. I have an email in to Ackerman and will find info on Cecil Tucker. A shame that such nice scope wouldn't have a way to be worked on.

Leupold used to.....

Honor their factory warranty for Premier modified scopes; but no more. When the founder of Premier passed away years ago, Leupold gave a deadline for their warranty to remain in effect; but that deadline ended several years ago. Since then Leupold has expanded their own custom reticle work many times over. You might check out their custom shop reticles and ask what the cost would be for your scope. You might be pleasantly surprised. They installed a cross hair reticle in my spotting scope for $37 several years ago. But I doubt you could count on this type of reasonable price now.

Leupold will likely do it themselves, that said you're virtually at the price of a low mileage LCS, which is a superior optic in every category.

I recently returned a 36X Luepold that had been bumped to 50X and the crosshair raised. The front lens was delaminating and showing bubbles all around the edges. I spoke with a tech at Luepold and explained the problem. I asked about the work that had been done by Premier and if it voided the warranty. I also specified that no changes be made on the work that Premier had done. They said it should be no problem and it might fall under warranty.

I sent it to them, they fixed the lens, left the Premier work alone and returned the scope to me no charge. I would suggest that you call and talk to them and be nice. They appear to be willing to work with you and a reticle change is probably doable. I don't know the current cost but a friend has a reticle change done about a year ago and IIRC the price was less than $100.

YMMV,
Rick
