Hi Everyone, My names Jim and I was told this is the place for Information on the rifle I picked-up recently. I finally stepped-up and bought a Remington 40 X Heavy Barrel. I always wanted a US Made, Quality, .22lr, Target Rifle and I hope I made the Right Choice. It's a CMP, US-Marked Rifle. Serial # 2537-B,
with Redfield Iron Sights. Hear different things about 700/722 based rifles, X
actions and other stuff. Not real sure what it all means, but hopefully with your Help and some more time on this Forum, I'll Learn! Would appreciate Any, and All Information you could share with me about my New Purchase!!
Thank You All for your Time and Viewing!!! Jim (hackit2) Lemont, IL.

Jim, Remington can tell you more about the rifle, like when it was made, but the rifle itself will tell the most important detail -- which is: how it shoots. Take it to the range, and shoot it. Then you tell us. ;)

Hi Bill, I know what you mean. I can't wait to shoot it. Just wanted to find out what I could about the rifle. I will take your advice and contact Remington to get the info. on it's history. Thanks! Jim

40x

Jim,
Your 40X was maybe built in 1981. (The Serial# on the receiver means nothing) Check the Barrel!
If you visit Visit Team 40X you might find everything you are looking for.

Thanks Jack & Doug for the links, I will try them both.

Doug, On the left side of the barrel, just forward of the receiver are the letters: W F L H, the last letter H is a very faint strike and is tough to make out. I'll see if I can con the wife's digital camera away from her and post a couple of pictures of it. I was told these rifles were originally sold by the CMP in the $400-600 range without any sights and they were ROTC/JROTC turn-ins. That's pretty much all I have on it for now. Thanks Again! Jim

This might help a little......

* the years 1943 though 1953 had double letters: ie, MM = 1943

As maybe seen, the year code letters duplicate; some knowledge of when the model was introduced should resolve the actual year of manufacture.

serial

Try 1964/5. and the serial does indeed help. According to the serial its a "B", made after "63". That change occurred about civilian 22400. The govt purchased in blocks and these don't fall in the delivery sequence of the civilian rifles but the change effected both.

Thanks Tuna & Brian for the Info.

Brian, I think 1964 makes more sense than 1981. But either way I'm Happy!
I'm sure this rifle will shoot better than I can. Can't wait to try some Federal
Gold Medal Ultra Match, that I have been saving for the Right rifle. Thanks! Jim

This may explain the barrel codes a little better. The two center letters are the ones you are interested in. Second letter is the month and third is the year it was built. You say the second letter is an F. It's probably a P or maybe a light strike R. Anyway, the L makes your rifle a 1964. The B in the serial number makes it a later 700 action. (swept back bolt handle) The earlier (pre 63) 40X's were built on Remington's 722 action. (straight bolt handle). Basicly the same action with a few minor changes. Most of the parts were interchangeable. Is that a word? Sounds right:)
