Hey guys/gals, i just signed up to the forum here. I am not a benchrest shooter, however i am potentially looking into it. I would like to see some matches in person. I live in Danville, Va. and was curious if anyone would be willing to share with me some info. on where in va. some event may take place, or range areas where i could see some shooting. I appreciate any info. in advance.

Thanks. bjohnson

Here are the IBS ranges: http://internationalbenchrest.com/ranges/usa_by_state.php . Here is the NBRSA site: http://nbrsa.org/ It's broken down by regions. The navigation in each is not consistent, but leads are there if you dig around.

Look around for a local range to practice and for informal shoots. Heck, some of the informal ones are about as competitive as registered matches.

When you look for a place to practice, you want a stable bench and the ability to put out wind flags.

The cost of getting into the sport can be daunting. Rest assured that there are ways to mitigate that. Mainly, there are lots of good used rifles and equipment around for good prices.

Once you get used to some of the cantankerous bickering online, you will not find a better, more helpful group of people than you will here or in benchrest generally.

Welcome to our addiction,

I *think* Rockinghan Gun Club is closest to you.

http://www.rockinghamcountygunclub.com/

They hold two registered NBRSA matches a year, and during the spring, summer and fall, host informal benchrest matches every month.

There are a number of ranges & matches within reasonable driving distance of Danville.

(Just deleted some information, as SGJennings already gave it)

Rimfire is going to take even more poking, but if you go through the ones organizations listed on the BR Central home page, you can get a schedule.

Welcome.

haha, no good shooters in va. huh?!! thats funny! well, hopefully there are somewhere. i appreciate all the replies here. i already know in advance the cost of equipment is nothing to sneeze at. i have a few nice deer hunting rifles that i reload for, but, i'm sure that the kind of rifles that are used in benchrest shooting environment are quite a few steps above that. so, the cost is one thing to consider for me. but, as previously mentioned, i could hopefully find some used equipment. i'm gonna research the links you guys posted for me. lucky for me, rockingham county is just about 20 miles away and i have family that lives there. thanks again guys...........bjohnson

There are two ranges that host UBR matches not to terribly far from you. I don't know what you consider "reasonable driving distance", but just looking at Google it appears that Gassaway, WV and Jonesville VA are maybe 150 miles or so from Danville. Both of those ranges will have UBR matches next spring through fall. You can visit: http://ultimatebenchrest.com/ranges for the location and contact info. One very good thing about UBR is that you can shoot what you have and you won't necessarily need a specialized benchrest rifle to get your feet wet.

Fairfax rod and gun club holds matches in manassas, it would be about a 4 hr trip for you. they are shooting a match this Sunday 12-11-11. The matches at the rock will start back in march or april and there is almost always some good used guns for sale there and would be a good place to get your feet wet. They have factory class and modified plus benchrest at their club matches and it's a great bunch to shoot with. Blackcreek in Richmond also holds matches, they start back in April also.
