new (to me) stock wood

I recently handled a custom rifle with a walnut-looking crotch-feather and curly stock but red almost like cherry.... I hadda' ASK the guy, "what is it?" He grinned and 'splained as how there's a stand of black walnut in northern CA/southern OR that has this rich reddish tint, that a guy named "Doc Goby" had piles of it at one time and it's getting harder to come by but still available.

To you'se guys like Butch Lambert who are commissioning nice stuff, you owe it to yourself to look at this stuff.

Here's a sample pic off the website, dunno as it's accurate but notice the tint. RED Black Walnut, gorgeous stuff!

That's about all I know but I'm looking into it.

Any of you guys ever seen or used this stuff?

Are we talking about black walnut or claro? This is an Oregon claro piece I've been working on.

The blank had a red tint like the one in the photos before I dug in... not so reddish anymore but I don't think that's a concern.

Yes, it's a hybrid (Juglans Nigra and Juglans Hindsii) commonly called "Claro" according to their website. http://www.gobywalnut.com/

The red stuff comes only from a small area on the border of OR/CA and of the trees in the affected area only a portion are really red.

You're giving me the shivers setting that nice hunk on a concrete block :)

There's a 1/4" rod running through the stock- you can see a bit coming through the butt. It was a foot or so off the concrete.

Yup Lynn, that's the stuff...... it grows a few hours south of me and I didn't know it existed until last week. And Doc Goby is kindofa' local legend around here but in different than my usual circles. Again, just got into the loop.

I love a little red in my stocks. Below is a factory mod37 Remington stock. I had him add a little alkanet root to give it a little red tint when it was refinished.

alkanet root1!!!!!??? OK, so how many of you guys did a search for this? Is there nothing new under the sun?
You learn something new here everyday! almost.

I'am a sucker for that bit of red tint as well. Have always added a bit of red mahogeny stain to my wood stocks on competition rifles. Put an automotive clear coat on and you are ready for whatever the elements throw at you. Will have to look into the Alkanet root.
