Hi! from canada

I'm new to Bench rest and i'm discouraged already. I'm planning on buying a rifle and scope to do some fclass shooting. I was thinking of buying a Remington 700 5r milspec 308. I've been reading some threads and its seems you guys are all shooting expensive rifles and scopes.

Does any one have an opinion on that Remington. Any suggestions on a scope would be appreciated also. Thanks

Johnny,
Welcome to the forum.
A Savage is cheaper and more accurate out of the box. They have a F-class version if you are planning to shoot it as is.

Xr-100/308

Another inexpensive option would be a REM XR-100/308.

They are exclusive to the Gander Mountain chain. The XR's
are all single shot actions with solid bottoms and are very
strong.

They also come with a better than average trigger and
a hvy barrel.

XR's also sport a laminated thumhole stock and are
easy on the eyes verses the savage.

All this for $750. Throw a Weaver 36x @ $340 and you
ready to go...

They may be hard to find. Ask a clerk to run a search
for you. You can also try Guns of America and pick
one up.

I own a XR-100/223 and it will outshoot my Sako 243
at twice the cost.....

Johnny -go with da Savage once .308

Hi Johnny, I've been reading quite a bit & I'm a big Rem fan, have several 40-x's, various calibers, but -
I agree with Butch, the big Savage F/TR in .308 is "quite a machine".
1-12 twist, 30" tube, 12.65 pounds bare gun, .308...what's not to like....
Search dealers, someone in your area will get you one for $935.
I got mine, and I set the trigger wayyyyyyyy down & it feels sorta close to my Jewell triggers' release ounces......sounds funny, but true.....
I'm seating first loads now, but I know people that have shot 3/8" groups/100 yds with theirs, with first stabs at load testing, before doing any ladder tests or tuning.
