I am interested in shooting f/tr and I am on a limited budget. I have an extra tikka 595 action. I have chance to get an unfired 24 inch master sporter barrel from mtguns in 308. It has a 1/11 twist and is .795 at the muzzle so its not a light sporter. The other thing is I am left handed and I wanted to start out by using the factory stock. Can anybody give me an thoughts or advise. Is this a good direction to start. I have leupold var11 6x18 scope with adj obj to get started with. Thanks in advance Rick. This is a great forum very informative.

You'll need to shoot a .308 or a .223, in a rifle capable of safely/reliably scoring hits on a target from 300y to 1,000y, depending on the match.

Go to a match, and watch, the first time. And Google for F-Class. There's plenty to read. Seek and ye shall find.

Rick it all depends on your expectations and what your trying to do. Yes, you can use what you have. Key is you need a bullet that will be above Mach 1 at the target when shooting out to 1000 yards (if your plans include shooting out to that distance). Get yourself some 155SMK's and Varget, (175SMK's for 1000 yards) go out and have some fun!

First of all my expectations. I don't expect to win anything. But I don't want to go out and look like a fool. I have have been reloading for 25 years but never what I call precision reloading. I do already own a remington 700 with a 20 inch heavy fluted barrel that george from ga presicion put on that has been set back one thread I assume that he rechambered to do that. I have a vari xii 6x18 with AO and farrell 20 moa I piece base. I will be shooting here in maine at 600 yards. I have done some shooting with 168 gr mk's with what I call good results at 100yds 1/2 moa. very little at longer ranges. I do now have 200 yds at my house that i can shoot when the weather allows. At these matches do i need a spotter. I do not own a quality spotting scope. I guess I should just go and watch a few matches. Sorry to babble on I am just a little tenative. Thanks again Rick

Most competitors bring their own scope, stand and a chair. Depending on how the matches are run, with three relays (or more) you'd have someone on the firing line, a scorer and then someone in the pits pulling targets. You may be able to use the other person's scope that your squaded with for scoring, unless he is going to use it while he's shooting. If it's a small match with only two relays they will score in the pits. You would be able to plot your shots at 600 yards with an 18X scope. While you can get by with a less costly scope, Kowa is the way to go.

If you haven't shot Highpower it would be a good idea to go observe a match. That way you'll have some idea of the format of a match and how it flows, along with learning how to score targets (wish we'd stick to one system...) Check and see if the range where you'll be firing at has practice sessions.
