Shot my first ever 600 yard match today and am curious as to what would be considered a decent score. I was firing a Colt 6724 and a 16X Leupold Mark 4, Jewell trigger and 77 Sierra MK's @ 2750 ft/secs, prone and pedestal. Winds were variable and left to right and then right to left.

Yes it was a tremendous amount of fun.
 
'Decent score' varies considerably on the range and the day. Sometimes the winning score under one set of circumstances wouldn't break the top five under others.

You can always check the current National Record scores for an idea of where you fall relative to those... Brad Farrell shot a 150-9X last year @ FCNC with his tactical rifle off a drag-bag; a 199-9x has held for not quite a year and a half for a 20rd string. Those are for F/TR, 15 and 20 round strings respectively. The record for 15rd pair-fire aka 'Fullbore' is a little lower (because it's harder, in my opinion): 148-6X. Note that the records are *not* up to date: I know of at least two scores, one from August and one from September that have been turned in (so say the match directors) and they ain't on the list yet...

There are probably people out there shooting 'cleans' with higher X-counts; the trick is to do it at a Registered Match ;)

Generally... if you can manage to drop less than 5 pts on a string with less than favorable conditions, you're doing okay in my book. Other days, you might drop 15 and come off the line smiling like a cheshire cat :)
 
+1 to what was said above, but will also add that F-Class is similar to golf (for me anyway) in that I compete against myself more than against anyone else. I try to do better each time I go out; sometimes I can get on top of the wind and score well, like the second relay of my last match; other times, well the wind seems to be unreadable and unbeatable at least to me.

I shot a 20 shot string and had a score of 178 - 2X, loosing big with two ugly "6's" I feel that F class offers a whole new level of mental commitment to shooting as the wind and time, not to mention distance do work against you.

Are you going to come to Boulder Rifle and Pistol Club 1000 yard match the first Friday in February? It is part of a multi-day regional match. I helped build targets for our use last Saturday.

If you do not already do so, we also hold 600 yard F-Class matches on the 3rd Sunday of every Month. We run a palma practice (800, 900, 1000 yards - has an F-Class component) on the second Sunday of every month is a great way to practice wind reads with no real pressure, as no scores are turned in.

Honestly... for a new shooter (to this particular sport) with a stock gas gun and a relatively low powered scope, shooting mag-length ammo... I'd say thats pretty respectable! Just 'cuz the bipod holds the gun up doesn't mean that it isn't prone to handling errors - which take time to debug, and even then, can still creep back in (ask me how I know that... :( )

As long as you enjoyed yourself and want to come back again... sounds like a 'success' to me.

Jeff, I did not know that there was an opportunity to shoot there in a match. I might well try to see If I can make that Friday 2/1/09 date. I am a memebr at Desert Sportsman's and shoot there with a fellow long range interested memeber frequently. He would also want to attend I am sure. Sunday's however are no good for me as family obligations supercede my personal interests :( Oh well.

Jeff, thanks for the invite, but living up here in the NW, the desert beckons and steel has been discovered at the ranges of interest.
 
Another opportunity a week from tomorrow, as our regularlly scheduled 600 F-Class match is a go.
