I have been working with a newly formed air rifle sector for 10 meter shooting with 24 youths. The benchrest game seems to be pretty interesting as well but different equipment would be required with scopes and not apature sights.
What rifles are the most commonly used and at what velocity? The rifles we now use are around 500 fps for shooting indoors. We have Avanti's,a Tau 200 and an AA 200.I heard about benchrest when I ordered some 177 pellets for the club. Thanks Don.

Hi Don, Welcome, Those aperature sights do not really give up anything to a scope ( I shot competition air, smallbore, & hp for years) maybe a point or two. Just have to use a front aperature correctly sized for the target.

Sorry forgot 2nd part of ?. There is a match rifle class. Your equipment fits right in. I think haveing your youths shoot from the bench would be a great way to teach trigger control as well as follow thru and proper sight alignment.

Topper,
We just started shooting AGBR here at Salem. Our first match was only two shooters, both of us shooting Walther LGR's ( Match Class rifles, like the ones you folks are shooting). We both agged over 700 for the three targets and had a great time doing it. Both rifles were wearing 6-24X scopes, more than enough magnification for 25 yrd BR shooting.

I hope you and the kids decide to give AGBR a try.

Agbr

That's a new term to me.We do have that distance on our outdoor range but only 1 of the rifles can be fitted for a scope. We are looking at more of the AA 200"s which can use either peeps or scope. For the agg to be so high your target arrangement must be quite different.

Topper,
AGBR is the AirGun BenchRest organization, which sanctions our matches. If you go to the Benchrest Central home page, you'll see their logo. Click on that and you can find a picture of the target. It has 25 record bullseyes which you have 20 minutes to shoot, with a match consisting of 3 targets.

We shot a match in Holbrook, MA yesterday, and I was the only one shooting Match Class. The conditions were a little trickier than the match at Salem a couple of weeks ago. I didn't quite make it to 700 this time.

Neat stuff! I guess the Walthers are pricey I know the new ones can be.They have some here in Canada. They go for about 2 to 3k.I was looking for a source of used rifles but they are scarce and some are priced as high as a new one.Lots to learn

Topper,
I bought one of my Walthers for $425 used, and know someone else who found one for $450, both on the Yellow Forum classifieds. Here is a link. http://www.network54.com/Forum/79574/

The one I shoot myself has a fancier stock (Walnut with some figure and an adjustable cheekpiece), and cost about $700.

Jim Edmunston imports older German Match rifles on a regular basis. He can be reached at troutmd@earthlink.net. I bought the nicer Walther and an FWB 300S springer from him. He's a nice guy to deal with and really knows his German guns. You can also still get parts for these guns, and there are plenty of airgunsmiths that work on them. The attached pic. shows the fancy Walther on top with a piece of wood attached to the accessory rail for bench use. The middle gun is the basic Walther, and the bottom is the FWB.
They all came with matching sights, too.

Good luck, and I hope to see you and the kids join us for some Benchrest shooting!
Todd

used air rifles

Those seem to be priced very reasonable. The ones we have are co 2or compressed air.The F..beau 300 is a good one as it is easy to cock. The fps is around 560.The air type are popular as some matches are 60 shots and that is hard to do for some kids with all that cocking besides shooting. All the shooting is standing only.To get them started we have rests built on top of the benches. We use a target return pulley system so there is no need to go ahead of the line. Thanks for the info. They are nice rifles.

classifieds

I had a look and there was some very expensive good quality stuff. It's amazing the number of adds.I also sent a message to the other chap. Thanks again for the tip.Don
