New Sinclair rest

Doing my morning reading on the john, I looked a little closer at the new Sinclair rest in their spring catalog. The windage adjustment caught my eye and after looking at it I'm wondering just how it's supposed to work. According to the verbiage it appears that the top pivots when using the adjustment knob on the rear of the rest. I'm not that knowledgeable about rest construction but I use a JJ and that moves the top left and right. If in fact the top pivots what does that do the butt in the rear bag. I can't say that I am able to visualize mechanical assemblies in 3D and this one puzzles me. I can't imagine that Sinclair would market something that didn't work well so I must assume that I've missed the whole point somewhere. Please educate me.

This is a good one, I'm up now, slept all evening. Our son is graduating High school this weekend, and this is the weekend for the "Senior All-Night Party". Now you would think all night means all night... wrong. All night means parrents have to Pick up the kids at school at 2am. What a treat for us.

Anyway I'm up and now reading BRC. I am excited to see the new Sinclair rest design. One of their older tops pivoted the wrong way, adding a bind situation when using the top for windage adjustment. The topic was brought up on BRC and I caught hell for mentioning it. I guess somebody was listening. This rest looks to have the Pivot between the bag and the adjustment screw. The arc for the bag movement is in the right direction this time. Additionally it looks as though they have brought the adjustment screw rearward and down, so it is close to the elevation screw. A well thought out rest at a glance.

Very nice, I'm always happy to see the Sinclair catalogs come in the mail, something good on every page..... Well except for page #4 The Hornady 366 has no buisness in the top rifle accuracy catalog of the free world. Nothing against Hornady, but what next, plastic handheld target throwers? It's just that, isn't there plenty of room in the Brownells catalog for this sort of thing?

I am with adam

It does pivot and all pivoters that I have seen pivot between the front bag and the back.
This cant be good as it will put a bind on the front end.
No matter how slight it could be a little more on one side and then the other from shot to shot.

I have found a good one that does not pivot

I have not ordered it yet but will do so in the off season this year.

DRGreenlaw rest

Vern,
I just ordered the "B" style rest from Dan Greenlaw. He is doing quite a bit of custom work on mine and at the same time keeping the price quite reasonable. Dan seems to be real easy to work with. Answers e-mails and phone messages very quickly. Dan was also nice enough to donate a windage top to this years IBS Score Nationals at Holton.
I'm looking forward to getting the rest in about a month.

Greenlaw rest

Dan just sent me some pics of the rest. He told me it would be 3-5 weeks when I ordered it. I think it has been just over 3 weeks since my final order was in. I am going to try and attach a couple pics. I am really looking forward to getting this in my hands and trying it out.

Anything that moves the forend left or right will bind to a certain extent. How much depends on how far you have to move it. A properly lined up rifle, rest and bags, the little movement needed does no pose an issue in regards to binding. I use the Sinclair and the windage movement and binding is not an issue.

Sent mine back in todays mail.

I thought they would have found another way to do the windage. The pivot reminded me of the old Sinclair windage tops & I never did like those, never bought one either.
I didnt like the pivot & the threads were a little to course for me,outside of that I liked it.
It has a very low center of gravity & the lowest adjustment of any rest Ive ever used.
The adjustment knobs are close enough to run them both at the same time. I worked the windage with my palm & the elevation with my fingers, with in a few groups I found I was doing both at the same time.
I saw the windage & elevation knobs were close together so I decided it was time to upgrade from my old Bald Eagle, I guess I'll wait for something else or build one.
BTW:I tried a new Farley out over the weekend, it will be listed in the classifieds in a day or two.

whats up with the Farley

Jay
What dont you like about the Farley? Can you bring it to Albert's or Jim's this weekend if you still have it? I am saving my pennies for a Butch Lambert shade tree, but i wouldnt mind looking the farley over. Lee

I'm not planning to attend either match. I just found out I have a new Henriksen ppc reamer on the way & I have several barrels sitten here waiting for me to do something with. If I do any shooting it will be at FnHam on Sunday.
You are welcome to come over and check it out if you want too. Bring your rifle and a bag so you can fiddle with it a while and bring some money just in case you gotta have it cause I'm getten rid of it.
It works good, probly nothing better for a score shooter, but, it aint for me.
