Hello guys and thanks in advance for your help. I am new to benchrest shooting and have a question. I know you guys have a quick simple answer to. I have been working up a load in my factory rifle( rem 700 pss 308) all factory. I have found a load that shoots very well for me, with one exception I get a flyer about every 3rd shot I am talking about .5 to .75 inch at 100 that is to say the first two may go in one hole then the third will be off by .5 to .75. Not always the 3rd may be the 2nd or the first. I have noticed that it is horizontal movement most of the time. I understand this is shooter error as a rule. Is there anything else that can cause horizontal movement 30% of the time. It is not bullet or brass I have eleminated these. What about scope mount, and bedding of the rifle these are two areas that I am looking at also the bags and rest are of concern. I have a hart base sinclair windage top with cordura no.2 bag and a procter rear bag. The gun is not as stable as I would like in the bags. Thanks again Buddy

Wind!!!!!

good point will a 5 mph windd or less I am guessing 2-3 mph wind move a 168 or 180 bullet .5 to .75 at 100yds? If so that could be the answer I dont have any flags yet and do need to invest in some. However the day in question there was only a very light breese. Think that could be it??

There are various calculators around for this. Google "bullet wind drift calculator".

But, yep, .5 to .75 @ 100 yards sounds about right for missing a wind switch at 5 mph.

Ok so I need some wind flags right. How many what kind? Things to look for in flags. Props, no props, tails etc. Do they come with stands if not what do I need for stands? thanks for the help Buddy

Imho

The comments on flags are true, but you will one in a million if you have a "factory' rifle capable of consistent .50 moa in 308. To shoot one hole groups one must first have a rifle that is capable, then overcome all the other variables. I do not mean to be critical, you have a rifle to be proud of but you must recognize its limitations.:):)

Buddy, especially if some of the wayward shots are going INTO the wind, then, before wind falgs, the action needs to be properly bedded - preferably, pillar bedded - either do-it-your-self, or, better yet, have it done by some who knows how. Precious few factory rifles will group up to their potential without bedding - when precision is the goal -even with [so called] 'bedding-blocks', "drop-in" bedding just doesn't cut it. RG

I guess I need to clear this up on bedding. I tryed to bed the action my self This is the first ond only one I have ever done. This is part of the reason I question the bedding. I ran the bed out around .75 of the barrel channel I have heard this is good and bad? I can easly float the barrel if this will help I dont know. Sorry I did not mention this in the first post it was an oversight. The stock is the HS factory stock for the pss there is an aluminum block in the forearm. Also I might mention that I am useing leupold rings and one piece base with the windage screws in the rear. Is this a good base with the twist in rings? I think there is to much room for movement. What is the best base ring set up for this type of rifle? Thanks for your input. Buddy
