New scope for HV gun?

Three or so years ago I bought a used HV gun at Raton. It is a Bat action with a nice stock. It came with rings but no scope. I bought a Weaver 36X to go on it. A year or so later I bought another used LV gun with a Bat action and a Leupold 45X frozen scope on Brackney mounts. I really liked the Leupold and bought a new one to replace the Weaver on the HV gun. Lo and behold I had forgotten that the rings on the HV were 1 inch and the Leupold is 30mm. Went to the Bat web site and couldn't find any rings in 30mm that would mount on the action. There appears to be only two holes in the top of the action, one for each ring mount. I talked to a rep at Bat and he couldn't help me. I'm loath to remove the action from the stock to drill and tap two more holes for Kelby or similar bases.

So, can anyone recommend a scope with a one inch tube and side focus similar to the leupold Competition model?

Send the action back to BAT and have them drill additional holes. Then purchase 30mm rings from Kelbly's. Sounds like someone at BAT feel asleep at the wheel, when the second holes should have been drilled. BAT usually provides excellent service. Who did you talk to?

Both my BAT actions have two holes forward and two holes rear. On both of them, I've mounted two Leuopld 45Xs with 30mm rings from Kelbly's.

Bat scope mounting

Bat makes full length rails. I have one on my Bat action that I bought from them. Not sure about the number of holes as I don't have the action with me. I just gave them the serial # and they sent me the rail. Ask them about it. Good luck. Don

Got a call back from Bat today. Rep said he found out that there were about 20 mounts made this way. There is only one threaded hole in the action to secure each mount. There are two additional small holes in the action that mate with locating pins in the bottom of the mount. They straddle the threaded hole to keep the mount from rotating. At least that's what I think he said. He said that if I sent him one of the mounts he would modify some Kelby bases to fit. I would also have to buy some Kelby rings. That would probably be cheaper than buying another scope. But buying another scope would be simpler.

Decisions, decisions. I may take one of those mounts off just to see whats going on there. My curiosity has been piqued. By the way, the action serial number is TD2 which means that was used by Tom Dixon (sp?) who worked at Bat. When I was at the Cactus last month someone walking by looked at the gun and said that he had TD3. I said that means that there was a TD1. He replied that TD1 seems to be wandering free and nobody owns up to having it. The rep at Bat said that Tom had sold off all his stuff when he retired but still comes by Bat often. He lives nearby. Interesting to stumble across some history this way.

Don, we shared a bench at the cactus, didn't we? That was yummy bread you had.
A full length rail is a good idea. There are only two threaded holes in this action so would that be sufficient to secure the base? The hole spacing is probably not some standard dimension though.

I've shot the gun the way it is for nearly two years now and it's okay but the cross hairs on the Weaver aren't as distinct as on the Leupold and the image isn't as clear either. I can get by with the gun as is, but I'd rather not just get by. Oh well, this is keeping life interesting.

Before the Cactus, at the warm up match at Visalia, Walt Berger won the 2 gun shooting a prototype Nightforce 15-55 variable, that I believe has a one inch tube. I believe that he liked the optics a lot, and was even able to shoot it in LV with a suitable barrel, on a rifle that had one of the Marsh actions and a stock with light fill. If you want a hotshot scope for a HV, that has a 1" tube, you might want to look into this new Nightforce.

Thanks for the info. The nightforce web site shows that scope as having a 30mm tube.

Well, I ordered a set of 30mm rings from Kelbly's today. Also ordered a Davidson dovetail base blank from Sinclair along with some other stuff. I'll have to see how proficient I am on my mill getting the different holes in the correct spacing.

Well, I received the dovetail blank and took off the scope mounts. Very interesting. Will have to decide if I want to utilize the pins. I haven't yet tried to remove them from the mounts. As the rifle is a 6ppc the two screws and some 272 on the bottom of the one piece base may be sufficient.
