I am about to build a new rifle (repeater) and need som help with the package. This will be my first custom rifle so all your input is appriciated :)
I will shoot at distances up to 600 yards and I am thinking about a 6,5x47 Lapua, 6,5x55 Swedish or a .308 win.

My initial thoughts are:

* Stock: McMillan A-5
* Action: A BAT VR or a Grizzly II
* Barrel: Krieger - not sure which model or contour yet
* Trigger: Jewel

The weight (incl. scope) is max. 11 pounds.

A buddy of mine has a 6.5x284 in a McMillan A5 with a 28" MTU contour (very simular to a HV) and a Stillar Predator receiver, Badger Metal all around, Lep. 6.5x20x40 Vari-XIII, 20 lbs. all up, good luck on seeing 11 lds.

I put a 26" Krieger #5 sporter barrel in 300 WSM on a Stiller Predator action for a friend last winter, then he bedded it into a McMillan M40A1 stock. It weighs 11.5lbs. with an aluminum 20 min. sloped base, aluminum TSR rings, and Leupold 4.5-14x50 scope. Don't recall what bottom metal he used, but the stock didn't have any additional fill, so it's bound to be at least a half-pound lighter than an A5. You could shave several ounces off a #5 sporter with fluting, but that costs an extra $95.

My preference of the three cartridges you mentioned for 600yd. shooting would be the 6.5x47 Lapua. Brass quality of the 6.5x47 is excellent, and recoil with 123s will be considerably lighter than with either of the other two cartridges. I've got rifles in 6.5x55 & 308, and would go with the 6.5x55 if there were any chance of wanting to shoot at 1000yds. down the road. But then I'd also toss that 11lb. weight limit out the window and shoot for a more realistic 14lbs. My first 6x47 is built around a Rem 700 SA with a 30" Bartlein #15 std. Palma, factory BDL bottem metal, Jewell HVR, Satern 20 min. sloped base, aluminum TSR rings, and SWFA SS16x scope, all in a McMillan A5 w/thumbwheel cheekpiece & 3-way buttplate - it weighs 14.25lbs.

Take a long look at the 6mmBR

My wife and I have 6mmBR rifles and compete out to 1000 yards with them. At 600 yards they hold their own with just about everything and is ideal. It uses a 308 bolt face so getting actions that work without any modification is simple.
