I built a 6.5 284 last fall and had a good time doing it.( a friend did the machining )

I just paid.

I'm looking at doing another this spring. A field rifle maybe #6 taper, light palma, something like that. Thinking of either .260-rem or .284-win. If I build a .284 I'll want to shoot the 168 bergers. My question is, Long or short action? Can I fit the .284 with this relatively long bullet into a short action and still have room for powder? I know I CAN but I am just fishing for opinions on this. Also Opinions on LR scopes under $1000. Clarity and good tracking are the most important aspects to me. maybe the 4.4 to 14 Leupold? Or Sightron? Always had good luck with Leupold. I'm from Oregon So I like to favor the Oregon companies.

Thanks for any responses.

Take a 6.5-284 case NK up to 7mm and seat a bullet you plan on useing, see how far the bullet protrudes into the case. I'm betting the 168s will go a ways into the body (loseing capacity)2.8-2.9 is AOL (depending on the make of action) for a SA. Long Action is what I'd do.

In a single shot, the .284 works fine in a short action. For a magazine, anything shorter than 3 inches really limits the bullet weights that can be used without seating deeply into the case. There is an aftermarket magazine available from Wyatt that is longer than a standard Remington and requires a little modification to the action when used with a short Remington action. The Stiller Predator action uses Wyatt magazines without modification. All in all, this is still not long enough for the heavier bullets and a long action would be more versatile.

Thanks guys, still thinking on this next rifle. Probably going with a 284 in a LA.
