New Hermes Question

I saw here that several guys seem to be using New Hermes engravers for use on firearms. It seemed like a good plan to me so I picked one up from ebay with a few engravers and a set of letters. I plugged it in last night and tried to practice a bit and the engraved letters are too small to read. I did a test and it's taking 1.25" down to .25" so it's 5:1 reduction. The set of letters that came with it are fairly small to begin with. I googled for instructions on how to adjust the ratio but I haven't come up with it. It's a model G 260 I believe, at least that's whats engraved on it. It's a fairly old one I think.

I thought that if I removed the screws closest to the stylus and moved them to other holes that are provided on the pantograph arms that might do it but I'm not sure that's going to work.

Any ideas how to adjust the ratio? Any help would be much appreciated.

I've got a call in to my buddy. Carl has helped a lot of the BR guys find machines, fonts, and helped with their problems. The model that you mention is not in any catalogs that I have. Are you moving your stylus also?
Carl is the retired SW sales manager of New Hermes and still piddles with them. I will let you know what he says.

Butch, I really appreciate it. The stylus is moving. Buying bigger letters would work!

Here's a picture of it helps with identification:

I've been to the New Hermes site and couldn't find instructions.

Talked to Carl. Yours was built before World War II. He hasn't seen one in many many years. You are stuck on ratios as they are not adjustable like our newer ones. He said if the machine is in good shape just get the largest fonts that you can find which he thinks are 1 1/4" outside diameter and you could get as large as 1" letters. It does look like a dinosaur.

Thanks Butch, I went out to the shop and messed with the arms of the pantograph and it sure seemed like they wouldn't adjust. I think it's great that it's over 60 years old and still works well; kinda like a good old Southbend.

Also, if you need them, I have a number of fonts sets I could sell you if you need them and after you get the size matter straightened out.

Shoot me a PM, if you have a large font I'd be interested.
