New here- looking for new rifle

Hello, I have been watching this website and live in rural Idaho so if you can put two and two together, I need a new rifle. I reload and have a private range with steel targets out to 800 yds. Everything that I shoot so far are just off the rack rifles but I want to find someone to build me a heavy bench rifle. Who do I call and why do you suggest them? Thanks

This outfit is in ID and does custom work on Savages, which is a cheap(er) way to get in. They did a accuracy job and re-barrel for a friend of mine and he's satisfied. - nhk

I am leaning towards a Remington M700 action. Big barrel 30", Jewel trigger, McMillian Stock. If I had the action who would you recommend setting a barrel, close to Idaho.
nhkuehl- I like that the savage guys are in Idaho, does anyone know a gunsmith in Boise ?

So, is a custom action worth the money ? An M700 or Savage Target action is a half or third of some of these custom actions. I would think a good gunsmith could tune a factory action up nicely. And do the majority of these custom actions match the exterior of the M700, I ask because I was thinking of how the aftermarket stock guys would be able to offer more to a plentiful action like the M700.

Most of the custom actions will fit the Rem 700 SA footprint. The cost of a Remington or Savage action plus the cost to have a gunsmith blueprint that action (reduce tolerances and improve concentricity) generally equals or exceeds the cost of a custom action such as a Stiller or Borden or Bighorn http://www.bighornarms.com/ and others unless you already have the action or can do the work yourself. - nhk

Yo Flat.....

look at it this way, the reason custom actions exist is because they're a better deal than fixing up a factory one.

As one who has spent tens of thousands of clams over the course of 25yrs trying to prove factory rifles and chamberings can be really accurate..... I can state from bitter experience that nhkeuhl is right.

So I contacted Scott and was impressed. I ordered a Savage Dual Ported Action from Northland. Scott is gunna order me a barrel. I want a bench rifle, so I was looking at the McMillan line of stocks, I like the looks of the Tooley MBR. What stock would you guys buy ?

leading a horse to water...

Flat, you're asking questions that have been asked HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of time before. This is the Gunsmiths Corner of the Forum.

Not the "what stock, what barrel, what action, what caliber, what scope, blah blah blah" section of the forum. Most of the forum members are way more tolerant of this misplaced content than I, but I would rather read about the threading/lathe setup questions recently featured and other GUNSMITHING issues until the cows come home before I read yet another request from a newbie about what stock to buy.

If you would just use the SEARCH function, on this and all the other shooting forums, you'll see thousands of recommendations. But you just might not care about all of them other fellers, and think your questions are unique to you. (Secret: they're not. Pick from among various good options, and take your chance. We've all done it, and it's the way it must be.)

Head on over to Factory/Hybrid rifles, and start reading.
