Im new to long range rifle competition. Ive shot IDPA and IPSC for years but its getting too expensive to go out and waste 500 rounds in a day. I just bought a bench rifle. Its a Remy 700 action in 308 done by Hart, Schillen 1/10 26 in bbl and a Holland super varmit stock. I was wanting to use this for F-class. any suggestions on scopes? I dont want to spend a small fortune but I need some good glass. thanks for the help.

To sum up what I was told a few years back... Nightforce if you can afford it, Weaver T-series if you can't.

Scopes and F-Class

First, if you do not have it yet, get a scope base with 20 minutes of angle slope to help the scope adjust for bullet drop out to 1000 yards. You should still be able to get a 100 yard zero.

As to scopes, I use a Weaver T-36 and my wife uses a NightForce 12-42. Both scopes have a target dot. Love the NightForce and also the T-36. I can see the difference, but do not feel the least bit handicapped by the Weaver.

I would suggest a variable such as a Leupold Mark 4 in 8.5x25 or 6.5x20 with a 30mm tube and the M1 adjustment knobs as it is much more useful for other shooting than just long range F-Class. I have a 8.5x25 Mark 4 and TMR reticle as my tactical 308 and love it -it also works quite well out to distance. With laser range finders, mil dots are not really very useful anymore other than for hold over/off uses in the field.

Another scope that I like very well is the Super Sniper series. I would not get the 20x one, but have both the 10x and the 16x and like them very well. I have shot the 10x at 1000 yards and found no downside to it at all. Adjsutments are quite positive and repeatable. For the money, they are very hard to beat. http://www.swfa.com/c-231-super-sniper-rifle-scopes.aspx

If you are just getting into this sport (I too left IDPA for rifles) I would suggest shooting Sierra MatchKing 175 grain bullets with Varget powder. This works very well out past 1000 yards in a 308. Also invest (I just hate that word - it should be "spend the money" and get Lapua cases.

Good luck and have fun. With the times changing, the ability to reach out and touch someone at distance may become a very real good thing.

Nightforce BR if you can afford it or a Leopold VX 111 8.5 to 25.

You will not need a MOA rail with the Leopold as it has 90 minutes. You may need the rail with the Nightforce BR as it is 1/8 MOA clicks.

Stay away from the Bushnell Elite 6500 very unclear past 24X.

thanks for the suggestions. I went with a counter sniper scope for now. I was going to buy a nightforce but after I figured out my budget and the reloading stuff I had to buy it was to expensive. Took the rifle out last weekend and it shoots great. well under .5 at 100 yds. Now all I have to do is the fun part (reload and practice).
