Scopes and F-Class
First, if you do not have it yet, get a scope base with 20 minutes of angle slope to help the scope adjust for bullet drop out to 1000 yards. You should still be able to get a 100 yard zero.
As to scopes, I use a Weaver T-36 and my wife uses a NightForce 12-42. Both scopes have a target dot. Love the NightForce and also the T-36. I can see the difference, but do not feel the least bit handicapped by the Weaver.
I would suggest a variable such as a Leupold Mark 4 in 8.5x25 or 6.5x20 with a 30mm tube and the M1 adjustment knobs as it is much more useful for other shooting than just long range F-Class. I have a 8.5x25 Mark 4 and TMR reticle as my tactical 308 and love it -it also works quite well out to distance. With laser range finders, mil dots are not really very useful anymore other than for hold over/off uses in the field.
Another scope that I like very well is the Super Sniper series. I would not get the 20x one, but have both the 10x and the 16x and like them very well. I have shot the 10x at 1000 yards and found no downside to it at all. Adjsutments are quite positive and repeatable. For the money, they are very hard to beat.

If you are just getting into this sport (I too left IDPA for rifles) I would suggest shooting Sierra MatchKing 175 grain bullets with Varget powder. This works very well out past 1000 yards in a 308. Also invest (I just hate that word - it should be "spend the money" and get Lapua cases.
Good luck and have fun. With the times changing, the ability to reach out and touch someone at distance may become a very real good thing.
