Happy Wednesday, Happy October, Happy Near End of Benchrest Season

A small (but feisty) group of us have banded together and formed a club. The Foothills Air Rifle Club. We are in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains at 8300 Feet.

We are JUST getting it together. We Plan To shoot Air Rifle Benchrest, Steel Silhouette and eventually, Field Target.
We are in the Colorado Foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Informal Fellowship, and the target is the only authority. We currently have one ad-hoc range that has 2-3 max firing points. It is outdoors, with a max range of 50Meters. It is my driveway (yes, it has a safe backstop). We will shoot in wind, rain, snow and even when it is sunny outside. We will not shoot during electrical storms, thunder or lightning (this is lightning strike central). THANK YOU for considering us and THANK YOU for supporting Healthy, Sporting Competition with Air RIfles.

PLEASE If you have not, Join the NRA. at http://www.nra.org

Thank you for reading this.

Always good to hear of a new benchrest club, whether it be air rifle or rimfire. Welcome to the community, I wish you well.

Please consider taking part in the BIPM postals, I would be pleased to offer any assistance should you wish to do so.

(8300ft, boy that’s way up there, I would be interested to hear how pellets behave at that altitude)

Going to attempt to participate in the BIPM postals for sure

Pellets are pretty well behaved at altitude. Rounds and wads are pretty stable. Hunting pellets (like preds) are good to about 50yds then they fall apart ballistically. they hold nicely and group out to about 35 yards, or so sayeth the critters

PCP guns charged at lower altitudes seem to be fussy (so charge 'em at altitude)

Until funds come you will see my scores in the springer columns (hard corps) springers are very consistent at altitude.

the others are pcp guys (and I will get there) the main thing is to get holes in paper, aim small, miss small and all that other stuff.

Thanks for the nice reception and SEMPER FI!

Brian,

I do think it's more a matter of attitude than altitude. Although, you're right: 8300 feet is way up there, no doubt about that!

Dgifford99,

Is there really enough oxygen up there to support us Flatlanders?:confused: And, from everything I've heard, the Rockies are notorious for stirring up more-than-gentle breezes.

Good luck, and a driveway is as good a place as any, and better than a lot when it comes to shooting. I do the same at my house, but usually as a one-man team. It's so quick and easy to be able to just step out your door, spend a couple of minutes setting up, then start shooting.

Keep in touch,

Dave Shattuck

In fact, Dgifford99, is there really enough oxygen up there to support us Flatlanders?:confused: And, from everything I've heard, the Rockies are notorious for stirring up more-than-gentle breezes.

Attitude, patience, someone to score and no critters in the way. (we get a lot of critters and frequently have to shoo the elk to get out of the driveway) Oxygen? if a total flatlander, bring a sleeping bag, come early and acclimatize. (we got room)

since it is not the top of the mountain our driveway is cut in so the prevailing winds are not bad at all. when they get uppity though, it is a total swirl

Welcome Don

From someone who spent some years on the Front Range and spending much time in Estes Park, I understand the wind potential. 100mph was not that rare. Hopefully you'll not have to place your target boards on a neighbors driveway to compensate. Now for those indoor competitions, is your house of the 'open and spacious' design? lol
