I have ordered a new barrel for my 6.5x284 Norma. I need to decide on the throat length. I do not shoot the longer Berger VLD or the 142 SMK. I only shoot the 140 SMK and I am thinking that 3.000" OAL on the throat should be the right length. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Dave Kiff's Suggestion

Dave Kiff's suggests that you seat the bullet you intend to shoot .050 above the neck/shoulder junction as a dummy round and

send it to the reamer maker. I would guess that he means from the base of the boatail. I am sure someone with a 6.5X284

can give you a better answer. Give Dave Kiff a call and he will have the answers.

I made a mistake

Here is the info from Kiff.

When a customer calls, I ask what brass he will be using and what bullet he plans to shoot. I can usually spec the right throat length and headspace based on this information alone, but it is best if he sends a dummy round with a bullet seated exactly where he wants it--for example with the top of the boat-tail .050" above the neck-shoulder junction. I measure the dummy round off the ogive with a 100-power Deltronic comparator, inspect for concentricity and gauge the headspace. Then I prepare a print for the job right away. The completed reamer is usually ready in two to six weeks.

Sorry
