Well i had discussed this on bit on other forums, but the actual rifle is here.
New unfired, very nice wood, sporter bbl 1/14 twist,
I have a lyman bore cam...not real impressed with the bbl.
Will shoot it, but thinking it need a healthy dose of Tubb's lapping bullets.
Gonna try berger 52's and hornady 50 vmax with h4198.

We shot IMR4895 in our Savage 112V .222's, under 52 HPs for target work. Hornady 50gr SX SP for groundhogs.

trigger, crown & bed.

all Remington barrels look rough.

If it has rifling the full length of the barrel, give it a chance. Some of these barrels like to be well seasoned before they shoot. Then if you over clean they stop shooting for a while. Don't let the bore scope drive you nuts.

The Tubb lapping bullets for .222/.223 are 69 grainers. Don't be surprised when they keyhole.
 
Ok first out of the gate will be hornady 50 gr z-max(a-max) and
wc846 which is close to blc2.
Sierra's book put it on the top of their list for 50's.
Reset trigger to 2#, floated the bbl, cleaned and lubed.
Put a 8.5-25x leupold on it.

yes i have some

the initial shooting is looking at velocities
and fire forming cases..and practice.
i will look at groups..but figure i
have lots of work to do.

But not in ca..well you cannot use lead.
Something might eat it and upset the worlds ecological balance.
 
simple report..
nothing interesting with a blc2 clone and 50 zmax.
up tomorrow will be 52 bergers and h4198.
 
The lead issue is one of the many reasons we sold our house and are moving to Idaho.
 
so today i shot berger 52's moly'd with h335 using data from a fellow shooter.

much better than with the blc2 clone. got down to about 1/2".

still shooting some 2 and 1 groups which make me wonder if
it is me learning to shoot with my right hand and eye.

will retry some loads next time out
 
i shot three more loads today, a step up from the last 335 loads.
small improvement at the first step, but nothing to write home about.
i think bedding will be the next step.

tho i have still not shot h4198....
 
BDL of same vintage

I have a BDL of about the same vintage. The previous owner didn't seem to know much about cleaning and the barrel has light pitting. Fortunately, not so much near either end. It has made no difference in the accuracy and really doesn't effect cleaning (with WipeOut and Accelerator). I was able to get the trigger on this one down to about two pounds safely. You can't do that with all M700 triggers, but it's worth seeing what you can do. Right now I'm using it in open-sighted bolt rifle matches so I'm not really trying for top velocity or accuracy. I use 19 point something of IMR 4198, Federal standard primers and 52 grain sierra match bullets. I figure that trying to wring the last bit of velocity out of a .222 is a bit silly when I also have a .22-250.
 
i made two pillars, and am bedding the rifle...it is drying right now.
yep, h4198 is next up.
 
SOME UPDATES.
i managed to break the toe of the stock off,
we have a guy at the range that is a woodworker
and he was able to rebuild the stock.( i did not know
i had broken the stock till i was home, and the broken
pc was missing..no such thing as a simple re-glue).

if i get some mild wind days i will try lt30, hbn berger
52's and some new lapua cases.

anyone else try lt30 in a 222 ?
 
H335 in a 222

Berger sat some records with his 222 with H335, 7 1/2 with 52's.

I shot out some barrels in this caliber back in the p. dog wars when everyone was converting their 222 40x's to 6PPC. My go to load was 19.5-20.2g of IMR 4198 with a 50g Sierra lead tip blitz, and the accuracy will shock you.

seat the bullets to kiss the lands.

H322, aa2230, H335 will really give you some great accuracy, and you should expect accuracy in the high 2's and low 3's.

We found that H335 gave better barrel life than H322, we shot bbls hot on p. dog towns.

A while back I acquired a nearly new early 722 222 with a Lyman 6X scope on it. When I ran a tight patch thru it had a loose spot about the middle. Regardless it seemed want to shoot. So after pillar bedding and putting a 6.5X20 scope on it I loaded up some 40gr Vmax and 23gr H4198 to the tune of 3800+ fps. Up to this point (approx 100 rnds) this antique has averaged a little under one half inch loose spot and all. I doubt Mike Walker and his pals ever invisioned that kind of performance. Don't know how long the barrel will last but as long as they continue to make barrels I'm not concerned.

I've had the following issues with Remington wood over the years:

1. Had a 3200 O/U 12 ga skeet gun that had the forend split and also the whole gun had to be replaced because the two holes that one of the ejector trip rods traveled in were bored out of line and the rod bound

2. Have a 870 28 ga skeet gun that had a piece of wood at the top of the pistol grip just pop off one day when I set the rifle in a rack at the range. Fortunately found it and glued it back on. Can't even tell it happened and never bothered since.

3. Has the forend of an 11-87 12 gauge split twice. Remington replaced the first one, I just super glued and reinforced the second figuring it would be an ongoing issue. Not sure why I had so many Remington wood issues.
