There was a new 1000 YARD BENCHREST WORLD RECORD set today, Sunday, August 16, 2009 at Reade Range in Allemans, PA.

Andy Murtagh of Tyrone, PA fired a RECORD target Score of 100 with a 4.2766" group. The record was set during match 5 of the Reade Range 1000 Yard Benchrest League.

Andy was shooting a 6.5 x 284 Rifle, smithed by Sid Goodling, Master 1000 stock, and Bat action. He was shooting Sierra 142gr. tipped bullets. Load was 47.5 grains of H4350 and Winchester brass.

Congratulations to Andy on his "RECORD SETTING" shooting!!!

A picture of Andy's target is attached. Additional pictures will be posted as soon as possible of Andy and his target on the club website www.readerange.org

Very nice Andy. How were the bullets tipped? Meplats trimmed and pointed?

Andy, way to go! At least you let me have the record for 24hrs!!!

I knew that 6.5 of yours was capable after what I have seen it do.

My group was also tipped. Trimmed with Hoover's Meplat trimmer and pointed on a Whidden die (6BR 105 Berger VLD).

Two score records in 24 hours...that seems like it is a record in itself :)

JB

p.s. - here was the one you beat...

Thanks to all

First off I'd like to thank everyone for their kind words and congratulations. Secondly, I would like to congratulate Jason Baney on his outstanding accomplishment on Saturday at Williamsport. Lastly, I thank God for allowing me the opportunity to compete in the 1000 yard community.

In reference to the question regarding bullet tipping I first sort the bullets using a JB bullet comparator. Once sorted I cut the meplats using a Hoover meplat trimmer, followed by a Hoover bullet tipping die. I hope this is helpful.

Best regards,

Andy Murtagh

Just thought I'd throw something in..........

Mike Johnson shot a 3.988" group against the "big boys" on Sunday for match 6 at Williamsport-with a straight 6MMBR. Would have been a range record if its wasn't shot in a heavy gun match. Went largely unnoticed because it was on Sunday's results.

Mr. Pendegraph,

I have a great way for you to see the operation I use first hand. There is a 3 minute video on www.bullettipping.com that covers the entire process minus the sorting of bullets on the JB bullet comparator. There is also a phone number of the man who distributes both tools. John can cover it all in much better detail than I could ever hope to.

I hope this is helpful. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Best regards,

Andy Murtagh

Thank you, Andy, for that very helpful link -- and congrats on your world record. I've just returned to benchrest after a 15-year absence -- it's like I landed on another planet!

Well done Andy! You are one of the most humble gentlemen I've met at Williamsport not to mention an outstanding competitor!
All the best
