I am kind of new in the world of competitive shooting, but not too new to the concept, but really need some help trying to figure out which direction to go with this. I am looking for some imput on some of the different classes and places to shoot in nc.
I have been shooting big bore magnum long range deer rifles for years and am really do not like them rattling my teeth out but i feel like i want somthing to shake the wind,i would like to know some of the more popular calibers, weights, barrel contours, and forearm widths,i am also looking for someone that can barrel a model 700 action and true the reciever some time before the spring,i have used hart in the past and been pleased for what i was doing with the particular rifles, but they told me 26-28 weeks on a rebarrel, and i really cant wait that long but i am also the type of person that if i cant have a foundation(barrel and action) that is good enough to be competitive i just assume go some where and wait to get my money worth

any help will be great!!!!!
Thanks,chris evans

Chris, first off,Welcome aboard, I think IBS is strong around your area, go to the website found on the home page on this website, check out classes, cours of fire, and some winners lists from the different clubs. make a list of the top winners and see what they are shooting. Weight plays into the barrel profile according to light gun classes so that will aid with that part of your decision, stocks, scopes will as well. As far as a gunsmith, again its your choice who you use, again look at the winners lists and see who is building winning rifles. Good luck and ask plenty of questions, you are on a great board that will help. Ron Tilley

NC Ranges and Gunsmiths

Chris

For benchrest there is Hawks Ridge near Wilkesboro and for F Class there is Camp Butner. Just google either one and find out information.

Two Carolina smiths that come to mind are Leonard Baity and Dave Tooley. Leonard is in North Wilkesboro and Dave is in Gastonia. I have had work done by both of them and been nothing but happy. Between the two of them you will find a majority of the rifles used at Hawks Ridge.

Almost every light gun will be a 3" forearm. Popular ones are the Tooley MBR from McMillan, Bill Shehane's Trackers and a variety of styles from Bruce Baer. Commonly see stocks in laminated wood and fiberglass.

Popular calibers in 1000yd benchrest include varieties of 6.5-284 and the 6.5x47 Lapua is starting to come into its own as well. You can also find folks doing very well with 6 Dashers and 6-6.5x47 Lapuas. There are also a few folks doing well with the 6.5-284 necked back to 7mm. Any of those with a brake are very ligh recoiling rifles at the 17lb light gun limit. There are a plethora of big 30s and a few 338s out there as well. The 300 Ackley is very common at Hawks Ridge. There is also the 308 Baer and 30 Hart and the 30 BooBoo. The 300WSM is also becoming a very popular chambering. For a real tooth rattler try Tooley's 300 Yogi, a 338 Lapua necked to 30 and blown out.

As for barrels, Krieger, Broughton, Hart, Bartlein, Shilen, Douglas, Spencer, Rock, Obermeyer, and many others have all been in the winners circle. Which one is like Ford vs Chevy. I have used Krieger and Broughtons with good results.

Perhaps the best advice I ever received about this game is the 3 Bs. Bullets, Barrels and Brass. Build up around those 3 items if you want a good shooting rig.

Take care
Rob

BR shooting

Welcome to the mostly friendly world of BR shooting. All good advice above. I'd add one more thing. If you can find the schedules, I believe that most scheduled matches begin in March, go to one and ask a pile of questions. Most of the shooters will gladly share info with you about equipment, scopes, calibers, and smiths. Go home have some of your favorite beverage, and shift through all the info that you'll get at a match, and make a decision.
Strap yourself in you're in for a hellva' ride!!!!!!!!!!
