i just aquired a bench rest rifle with a shultz & larson action in 22/243 i have reloded about 25 rnds but could use some help and info //// anybody know about the action and it has a shillen barrel i would like to know how to find out the twist also case length for the cartrige or just any general info would help

I have one (a .22-.243 Middlested) that I built back in the '70s. To hear that someone tried it as a benchrest rifle is a bit surprising.

The .22-.243 Middlested is simply a .243 case necked to .22 with the shoulder angle changed by 10 deg. It is, essentially, a .22BR with a 0.5" longer case.

You can find a whole bunch of info at:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=opera&rls=en&hs=0Oz&q=22-243+rifle&btnG=Search

Handloader magazine had an extensive article on the .22-.243 Middlested back in the 70's. I wish, now that I had not read it. That was the article that led me to build mine. Perhaps then, it was OK. Now, there are much better choices, IMHO.

You can measure the twist with your cleaning rod and a patch on a jag -- mount patch, insert a small distance, put a piece of tape on the rod near the handle, mark the tape's top, measure from mark/tape to receiver, further insert rod until mark rotates to same position, measure difference -that's your barrel's twist!

Good luck,
Glen

thanks for the info it is a good start and i do mean thank you. after reading you last post i get the impression you dont like the 22/243 and im wondering why. i have shot mine and it shoots good 1/2 in groop and only had a half inch drop from 100 to 200 yards and i think i need a better scope but i was impressed with it for first time of shooting, please tell me your opinion good or bad any and all info is welcome its hard to upset me so let me have it

also im looking for a good scope that wont break me any sugestions on a scope that is good for 600 to 1000 yards

My .22-.243 is a varmint rifle, not a benchrest one. It's built on an old (70's era) commercial Mauser '98 action. That makes it a bit long and heavy vs. some of the newer short actions.

I've shot some good groups with it out to 200 yds. but just have not ever got it to shoot as well as I'd like. I haven't shot it in quite a while, preferring to shoot my .22BR instead.

However, you've rekindled my interest. Maybe I should drag it out and try working up a load with V135 or V140 -- haven't tried those.

I can't make a scope recommendation -- maybe one of the long-range shooters, perhaps in the 1000 Yd. forum, can.
