Hey guys Im new to BR but have been reloading for a few years and hunting most of my life. I currently reload for a few pistol and a few rifle calibers and I am satisfied with the level of accuracy Im getting for hunting and paper punching, Although it is inside of 300yds 95% of the time.I am currently gathering items needed to have a rifle built that will push my ability as a reloader and shooter. The range I go to most only goes to 300 yds. but I dont want to be imited to that distance. I guess my newest question is what caliber should I start out with in this BR business. I know Im going 6mm I just cant decide between PPC,BR,Dasher. I like the idea of the improvrd br but I dont have a dedicated barrel to fireform in unless I burn up a coyote rig and chamber it with the same reamer? Any how where I live I dont know anyone who shoots competitivly so any advice or help would be great. Thanks

I think you would be hard pressed to beat the 6mmbr for a all around case, its easy to load for, very accurate and barrel life is great. In my opinion, you would be very happy with the 6mmbr. Make sure it will shoot the 105 to 107 class bullets no turn neck, and it will make you smile.

twist

If your looking for longer ranges will will need to shoot heavier bullets. Make sure you don't get a 14 twist or you will be pretty much limited to 70 grain bullets. An 8 twist is perfect for the 95-107 bullets from Berger.

thanks for the responses fellas, Im from Milwaukee WI. The rig Im tryin to get together is a Stolle Panda LB/RP no polish, no ejecter, stainless Krieger 8 twist finish length of 28", Kelbly trigger and a Bill Shehane stock either ST-BR or the TOOLEY with the vertical grip wich is easier for me to shoot cuz I have a bum wrist. I kinda want to go one of the improved BR versions for the speed factor but being kinda GREEN I dont wanna bite off more than I can chew.

Great bunch of componants, just make sure the chamber is what you want and its done right. Good luck, Ron Tilley

Brandon, I'm not shure how a guy logs on to BR central asking for advice on what cartridge he should chamber his soon to be built "only" target rig for, and NOBODY recommends the 6 ppc ! Kinda makes one question the validity of any information one garners from this site.
A run of the mill, 6ppc .262 nk is the sweetest shooting ,most responsive to reload cartridge you will ever shoot. ( a 30 BR is too,but Brandon said he wants a six !) Get a 1-14" twist barrel, Everybody makes quality 65-68gr BR bullets, a lot of different powders and primers will work. one set of 6 wind flags and it's fun,fun ,fun,"till daddy takes the T-bird away". Also lots of Quality BR rigs in the classifieds for 1200-1800 bucks.Don't forget that 6ppc's have shot in the .200s at 300 yds in registered competition. It may not be the ideal 600-1000 yd cartridge, but unless you want to set flags out to those yardages everytime you shoot, what's the difference !
Get a 6ppc first, and try the other stuff later.

Nader, no need to question the validity given, nothing but the truth told, and he will not be limited to 300 yards or powder choices or turning necks and fireforming unless he chooses. Ron Tilley

thething is Ive already ordered an 8 twist from krieger. and are'nt most ppc's 12-14 twist with a 22" ish barrel? The barrel I ordered is 28" finished length. another question is the BR or improved BR's use a .308 bolt face, can the ppc use the same action but a different bolt or would I need an entirly new action? or could Ijust get a different bolt? With my 22-250 I shoot primarily to 300 with satisfactory results. I know its not BR results but thats kinda the reason Im thinkin BR or Improved BR to make myself improve passed my current comfort zone of 300 yds. Id really like to see if I can be competitive at 600 or 1000 with ALOT of practice and some improvement in my reloading skills. I wish there was a class or seminar around here one could take, there really isnt even anyone that I know that shoots BR so I think you guys are my best source of info and I appreciate the responses. It seems like this is a hard nut to crack and although I feel totally addicted I feel the learning curve is going to be steep. Its nice to learn by seeing and doing, some times its hard to learn by just reading. does that make sense?

I think that you should consider the new "6X47L" built from 6.5X47 Lapua brass. I's easier to make than 6BR Improved brass and offers a little more ooomph. If you decide to use 6BR brass may I recommend the plain ol' 6BR? Just make sure that your gunsmith chambers it SHORT so that you have to bump the shoulders on each case and the 6BR will shoot wonderfully well.

BTW nader's got a point. Shooting at 600 is kinda' frustrating because of the flag situation.......... heck, shooting at 300 is a bear. Either way, this rifle will SHOW you why flags are required.
