Need pointers on bedding mod 70 win heavy varmint

Hi all,
I could use some pointers on how to properly bed a Winchester Mod 70 heavy varmint .308 in an HS Precision stock with the aluminum bedding block. I have bedded several Rem 700s with great results but never with a bedding block. And have never bedded a Winchester. Should it have a full length action bedding or just recoil lug and tang area? The rifle shot ok. Groups about 1 inch at 150 yds with factory ammo. But after taking it apart and taking a few measurements, I discovered the recoil lug was bottoming out in the stock and was touching on the front & sides of the recoil lug area also. The rear of the action had no contact with the bedding block. The tang just pulled down on the stock. Would appreciate any help.
Thanks
Dan

WHATEVER IT TAKES, IMO you need to center everything up and let it settle into a neutral position under it's own weight. No screws, no straps, no rubber bands no NUTTIN' just tape around the barrel. I'd definitely hog out the bottom of the lug recess or grind the lug shorter for clearance.

And for the M70 I'd bed from tang to barrel shank, all the way to where it tapers down. The entire action, rails and all.

Thanks for the help Al. I do all my 700s exactly like Richard Franklin's stress-free bedding instructions. I have just never done a Winchester before or a rifle with an aluminum bedding block. I have already hogged out the lug recess & taped the barrel several wraps to hold it in its original free-float position & to keep it centered in the barrel channel. I left a portion where the tang rests on the stock to support the action in its original position also. It settles in nicely. I also bought some stock-inletting screws from Midway USA just to help guide the stock to the action & just plan on using a couple of wraps of tape to hold every thing in place till the bedding sets up. Theres not much taper to the barrel. It looks almost like a straight taper from the action face to the muzzle. Are you saying to bed the action a couple of inches forward of the recoil lug? That has worked great for the 700s. One more thing, shouldn't the front & sides of the recoil lug have a couple of layers of tape to have clearance after bedding? I know the bottom of the lug should have clearance.
Thanks
Dan

I'm of two minds about tape on the sides of the recoil lug.

I tape the bottom. And currently only the bottom half of the sides.

Here's why.

Benchrest actions or "target" actions are often filled in on the bottom, no magazine cutout. Most agree that they shoot better. The conventional wisdom is something like "more bedding area." Another theory is that the solid bottom offers more support for the lower lug abutment. But what do these items offer? What does the solid bottom actually DO?? I don't think the rifle flexes all that much vertically once it's been properly bedded, and YES that's why I suggest the first couple inches of barrel be supported also. IMO the solid bottom offers another benefit entirely.

IMO it stiffens the action sideways...

It is currently my opinion that one of the big problems with a magazine rifle is sideways flex. The thing flexes like a fish. Therefore I feel that more attention need be paid to containing the sides of a magazine rifle.
