Hi,

I can't seem to locate my old winchester catalog and need to know the length of pull for the 30/06 target model.

What would be a good recoil pad for this stock? I shoot bench and F-class @ 1000 yards or less. Looking at kick eze and Pachmayer decelerators. The stock has already been shortened. What models of pad are appropriate for this shooting? What is the max depth before accuracy is affected?

Whoever shortened the stock, put a curve in it to match the metal butt plate. Should I have the pad put on like it is or square it off?

Thank you. Bob A

I don't know what the original length of pull was, but I'm going to guess around 13 3/4". The last pad I installed was a Limb Saver. Other then it was a little difficult to work with because of its softness, it is great recoil reducer. I actually think it reduces recoil better than the pachmayer pads. And yes you have to square off the stock to fit most pads unless you can find a prefit pad for it. And even if you do, I have never seen a prefit that looks as nice as one that has been fitted properly to an individual stock.

I talked with Kik eze and sometimes using their pads, you can put it in a sealable baggie and put it it hot or boiling water till it softens, then put it on. It may or may not conform to the curve. It has worked several times he says.

If anyone is thinking about trying it, contact the pad maker first.

Stephen,

I found my catalog and it was 13 1/4". Mine was cut to 12 1/2. I decided to go with 13 1/2" including a spacer. That way I can take it out later if I want it shorter. A friend said squaring it wouldn't affect the value since it has already been cut once so that's how it will be done.

My R77 is 13 5/8" and it feel clubby with a winter coat on. I have long arms and neck so 13 1/2 should be about right.

Now I have to decide whether to use the original red brown finish or take advantage of the black walnut. Not much figure if any, but I always liked walnut for what it is. Didn't think much of the original.

Pre-64 M70 Stocks

LOP for the M70 Pre-64 Target Rifles (National Match, Target and Bull Gun) was listed as 13 1/4 inches but they varied some. Standard Rifles, Super Grades, Carbines etc. had 13 1/2 LOP.
