need kid's BB gun

My anti-gun daughter surprised me, said she was considering getting my 9 year-old grandson a BB gun for his bithday. They live in a rural town and most of his buddies have started plunking.

Anyway, I'm looking for a good quality pump, lever or semi-auto (?) youth model .17 BB gun. Can I get some suggestions. The ones I see at the 'big-box' stores look like junk.

First and foremost, I would check local and state laws about discharging a BB/Air gun within city/county limits. Some places do consider them to be a sever enough firearm as far as them being illegal to discharge unless at a shooting range, such as here in California in some places.

As for the rifle itself. If all he is going to be doing is "plunking" as you put it, the 'big-box' store BB guns are more then enough. I will bet that is what his friends currently have and he would want to be like his friends, not different. I see no reason to go out and buy a $150 BB gun when he ain't going to position shoot or benchrest with it. What he will probably be doing is shooting cans at 10 feet or little green army men at 10 paces, also his friends will have $50 guns that will be dropped, kicked and who knows what else to it. Why not give him something that can take the abuse and still be around the same as his friends?

Just my $.02
Bill

QB78 is by far one of the best bargains out there

Get it here
http://www.archerairguns.com/qb78-airgun-family-air-rifles-s/27.htm

It's a single shot, bolt action pellet rifle
It's made of all steel and wood.
Most importantly, it is accurate and very, very reasonably priced.

It uses co2 but can be upgraded to bulk fill or to use paint ball tanks.

If you want an accurate single stroke pump airgun, another great choice is the Daisy 953.

My kids have both of the above love theirs. They use their allowance to buy co2 carts for the QB78 as they really don't care to pump their Daisy 953 even thought it is only one pump per shot.

Both are super accurate which is what matters.

PS Stay away from BB guns, as the BBs bounce back more and are more unsafe as a result. ALWAYS wear eye protection when shooting pellet guns, especialy when shooting BBs.
Remember to ALWAYS have adult supervision as even BB/Pellet guns CAN and DO kill people every year when someone doesn't abide by proper gun safety. AAirguns generally all can penetrate the skin and hence can be dangerous.
