need help in making a spider

I have a 14 x 40 Takisawa lathe with a D-6 cam lock mounting system on the spindle. I want to replace the chuck with a 4 screw spider so I can chamber shorter barrel blanks through the headstock. I am having difficulty in finding a face plate with a D 6 mounting that is small enough in diameter without turning it down for three days or so. I thought about a chuck backing plate to make the spider. Do you guys have any suggestions or sources that may be helpful? Tim

Tim,

I just received my 2011 Grizzly catalog and if I recall correctly, they make just what you are describing in a D1-6. If you wanna go that route...

need additional info on grizzley spider back plate

Does anyone know what the length of the Grizzley D1-6 spider back plate is from front to back and the diameter of the hole? Their tech dept is unavailable due to bad weather. Thanks Tim

Guessing but it looks like 2" to me. The cams are 7/8" and the plate looks slightly thicker as well as the cover.

My lathe uses D1-4 and a 1" plate would work because the spindle sticks out only 7/16", this leaves me 9/16" to center a 3/8 bolt. If you can use a lathe you can make this spider and a piece of plate and a few cams are a lot cheaper than $200.

I use homemade tapered bushings to prevent the screws in the spider from leaving marks on the barrels. The bushings are brass and turned and bored in same chucking so they are very concentric I've made a variety of ID 's to handle diff bbl diameters and if there made tight there's no need to indicate cause there true to lathe center

midel1974,
I sure would like to see a picture of what you are trying to describe. Knowing the OD of a barrel is not concentric or coaxial with the bore lets me wonder how it would work.

Tim,
One of my machinest Buds has a couple of D1-6 chuck adaptors. He is going to check dimensions later tonight. I think they can be modified to be able to put your screws closer to the nose of the spindle. Man, a D1-6, do you have a slave to change chucks for you? I'll send you an email when I find out.
