Necking down from .30 to .284

I am getting a new barrel chambered in 7mm/.300 RCM for my hunting rifle. I generally use Redding 3-die sets (body die, Comp. bushing neck die, Comp. seater), but Redding doesn't make the Comp. bushing neck die for this wildcat. Therefore, here are my questions:

1. Are there any advantages/disadvantages for initial necking down or occasional resizing by using body dies versus FL dies?

2. Should necking down be done with standard or bushing dies?

3. If necking down can be done with bushing dies, I would consider a Redding Type-S FL die. Would a neck bushing die also be needed, or can the FL die be adjusted to only neck size saving me the $ of a 3-die set?

4. I haven't used anything but Redding for years. Would you recommend looking at something else (e.g. Forster, Hornady, etc.)?

These are questions that may best be answered by Redding. I am uncertain regarding necking down using a bushing die, but, if desirable, it may be able to be accomplished simply by using a 7mm bushing in the 300 RCM die. Ask Redding. 1-607-753-3331

Necking down

The first time you will need to use a standard FL Die to resize/neck down the entire neck area.

Body or Bump dies have their applications; however for hunting I would use once fired brass.

I would buy a Redding full length die for the application 7mm/300 RCM.

I would buy a Redding or Forester Competition seating die.

I would buy a Lee Collet die for neck sizing after firing the cartridge. Lee will make you one if they are not listed; just send them 3 fired cartridges.

Your biggest problem will be getting quality brass. Lapua or Norma are very good.

Why do you recommend the Lee collet neck die instead of one of the various Redding or Forster ones?

Lee Collet Neck Die

To my knowledge Lee is the only company that makes Collet Dies.

To be honest the Lee Collet die is simple to use (follow the instructions) and makes very concentric ammo (use the two stroke, turn 180, method).

I have found the Lee Collect dies perform better than bushing type dies on NON-TURNED necks.

I only use the bushing type dies on fully turned necks for tight neck chambers..

Best wishes

I also recommend a full length die for necking down. I neck down 6.5 to 6.0 and get much better results with a FL versus bushing die
