Neck Turning / Shoulder Question?

So do I want to stop short of the shoulder or just touching when I neck turn? Does anyone have a sample picture of a turned neck they can post or e-mail me? I finally stepped up to a Kinneman turner, SWEET! What RPM do I want to turn out? I have a cordless screw driver which is at 180 or a variable cordless drill.

Many thanks!,
Dennis

P.S. Okay, I give, whats the trick? I have been monkeying for a bit trying to get my turner dialed in. I am using the expander that came with it along with my 6.5 to 7mm expander. Brass is new Lapua. Everything seems fine until I get to the doughnut area and it tightens up to the point that my case spins inside the holder. I have tried both my handheld holder and my Sinclair cordless adapter holder. I am using Imperial wax on the inside and KCP oil on the outside of the case and on the mandrel of the trimmer. Am I missing something?

Why would new Lapua brass have a donut? What am I missing? What is the headstamp of the brass, in other words what is the chambering?

From your other post it looks like you are expanding 6.5-284 up to 7.0-284. If this is the case then you have some of the virgin shoulder in the neck or a donut as you referred to. You don't want to turn the full thickness of this donut area in one pass. Set your cutter to take a portion of this, maybe .002" or so.

It is new Lapua 6.5-284 brass sized up with a Sinclair sizer die / mandrel . I think it is just springing back more on the neck shoulder junction? The turner mandrel fits real nice until it get down to the area where a donut forms. Sorry about the confusion on me calling it a donut. Does the mandrel have to go all the way through? Thought about turning down the mandrel to fit the tight spot on this area. Just seems to me if inner dia isnt the same all the way through then turning would reap no benefits and maybe even worsen things?

I have had some new Lapua 6.5-284 brass recently which gave donut problems right from the start - I don't have any new cases from that lot left to check - thought it was my turning that had caused it, but couldn't see why. I have fixed it to some degree using a K&M cutter mandrel, but some of them have come back and need to be done again.

I believe the manufacturing process of the cases has been changed - possibly to improve the neck thickness uniformity, which is now better, but in doing so, a new problem has been created.

Has anyone else experienced the same problems?

Alan

Dennis, all I use is the oil that Dan sent with the cutter, and I cover the mandrel with it completely, so quite a bit of it ends up inside of the necks, it sounds like maybe the necks are sprung back a tad, try running them thru the expander twice, I bet that will work. Ron Tilley
