Neck turning motor?

How much torque do you think is needed for neck turning?

Ive got a windshield wiper motor kicking around that turns approx 65 rpm with around 13.5 ft/lbs.

I was thinking even if i used a pulley setup to get the rpm up to about 180 it might still have enough torque.

I have built many neck turners, 70-80, and found a 1/8 to 1/4 HP motor worked best. Here is an example of the motors I used. The unavailability of good used or re-conditioned motors at a decent price for this sort of motor made it financially tough to sell. This is a Bodine 1/8 hp gear motor that turns 120rpm and is labeled at 40 lb-inches.

Maybe ill take a trip to the local farm supply store to see if they got any good used motors around.
 
The motor pictured is a gearmotor meaning it has the reduction gears included. You might find an old washing machine motor or whatever in 1/4 horse and something like 1320 rpm. Then if you can see a reduction gear at a decent price and compact enough to move around easily it’s just a matter of setting up either a collet or shell holder on an adapter on the shaft. Kind in mind the rotation direction as all turners have the cutter going only one direction.

Im looking at that as well. I have a couple of 1/4 and 1/3 hp motors here. The local farm supplies also deals and rebuilds electric motors not just farm supplies.

I started with a 1/4" drill motor in a vise. I got a large drill press next and used it vertically. Next I used my Bridgeport, and the last about 20yrs I used my Clausing lathe with the brass in a collet. I use a Pumpkin for my PPC and a Stiller for my BRs. I initially used a K&M turner, it works very well and I use it on my 22s.
