Neck sizing with Wilson VS FL/Bump with Redding Bushing die

Since I had no response on my powder question earlier, maybe there's someone that can give me some info/input/advice on the pro's and cons between necksizing a 6PPC with a wilson bushing neck die, and Full length/Bump with a redding comp series bushing 6ppc die.

When I used to necksize only with my Wilson neck die, with 259 bushing (on 262 ND), my groups and aggs were better than when I started a while back with full size/bump all in one after every firing. Everyone I know in bench used to neck only, and maybe full length/bump after a couple of firings per case. Now everyone is full length/bumping after every firing... so am I, and my scores are worse.... Can anyone explain to me anything about this scenario??

Your info is will be much appreciated, as I am considering going back to necksize only.

Many thanks in advance.

My thought is that if I shot better when neck sizing only, I would be neck sizing only. ;)

I dont know a lot but my under standing is that a lot of peaple are full length sizing because they are using close or full case capacity which creates a double click at the top of bolt lift. To get rid of the double click you have to full length size. I started out just kneck sizing but as I incresed powder I had to start full length sizing. Now I full length size with a SB Redding die from the very start of a fresh batch of brass. Hope this helps. russell m

Gerrit,

It may be that you are bumping the shoulder to far back or in some other way are creating a "mechanical" issue with you ammo by the process of full length sizing the brass.

I'd be inclined to check the loaded round concentricty and the concentricity of the fired and sized cases, both neck and full length sized. It may be that the full length die is creating some case run out that the neck die doesn't and that is messing up your accuracy.

You don't want to set the shoulder back more than about 1 thou checked with a proper gauge and not just relying on the bolt closure feel.

I started just neck sizing my brass for a few range trips due to lack of a suitable press for full length sizing at the range. When I got a suitable press and used the die that Kelbly supplied to suit my chamber I didn't notice any change in the accuracy. The only difference was it was a lot easier to handle the rifle properly in the bags when I didn't need to wrestle with the bolt handle due to tight cases.

Hi Bryce,

Hows life down in Kiwi land??? Have you guys started training for the next world cup rugby yet?? :D LOL.. sorry had to get that one in....

The reason I started full length, was as you said, not to struggle with the bolt opening and closing.... I am still having that problem, with decreased accuracy... I think you are hitting the nail on the spot here... my concentricity might be out of the window... will let you know!! Thanks for the info!

Are you going to the Super Shoot??????

Cheers

Errr...... ahh....... yeah ........ the rugby, ummmmm..... !! :)

The Super Shoot might be a bit hopeful this year unfortunately.

Good luck with sorting out the brass. Are you ending up with the same neck tension ? If you are still struggling with the bolt even with full length sizing maybe your die doesn't suit the chamber. Send some cases to Harrell's and get them to make one specifically for your set up, it will be the best money you spend. I got Kelbly's to supply a custom die with my rifle that matches their reamers and I have never had any of this "click at the top" or tight cases of any sort.
