Neck diameter 260 Remington

So I bought a used custom built 260 Remington, the person I bought it from knows nothing about the rifle. I considered having it re- barrelled to a 6 br, but have never owned a 260 I thought I would at least give it a try. It has a bat action and the barrel is unknown. I bought new Lapua brass and some berger 130 vld to try in it. The brass out of the box measured 0.29 on the necks. I loaded 1 round a shot it to get some measurements of a formed case. The neck after being shot still measured.0.29 but a bullet will slide into the case. Not sure how this is, my question is this acceptable or should the necks be turned. The loaded round seems to chamber fine, just never seen this before.

In my experience if a bullet slides easily into a fired case then there is sufficient clearance. You mention it measured .29, but is that .290 or .299. All you need is appx .004 clearance so the third digit is important. JMO

Thank you for the response, it is 0.293 unfired and the same fired. Im sorry I should have put that on the post. Its crazy how it measures the same, but the bullet does slide in a fired case easily.

With a custom built rifle the barrel should have the neck dia. stamped or etched in the barrel usually on the left side. .001 clearance will work but it is best to have .002 - .003 clearance for better consistancy. If the bullet falls through the fired casing after being fired but measures the same as unfired you may want to measure carefully with a micrometer. Do not use a vernier caliper.

Does not make sense. .293" OD of neck, before and after firing would leave a loaded round with no neck tension/ bullet hold. o_O
