N-130 Versus H4198 for the 30BR

Although H4198 seems to have become the default propellant for the 30BR, I was recently told by a couple HBR friends of mine [one being a National Hunter Champion] that I would be pleasantly pleased with the results, if I gave N-130 a try in my 30BR.

For those of you who are long-time 30BR VFS shooters, have you found N-130 or H4198 to be more stable than the other? What has been your experience with N-130 versus H4198? :)

Both work, like everything else some barrels prefer one over the other. It takes 1 gr. more of the 130 to equal the velocity of the 4198. I had a Lilja that absolutely hummed with 130, others I haven't seen much difference. If you have some I would definately give it a try. Steve

About four years ago I worked with 3 powders, V V 130, 4198 and I forget the 3rd one. They all shot about the same but the edge at 200 yards was the V V 130 so that was the one I went with.

I had one barrel that shot better with N-130 than with H-4198. If you have some 130 laying around, no harm in trying it. Given how hard it is to find, I sure wouldn't go looking, unless for some reason, H-4198 doesn't shoot well in your rifle. As far as that goes, Roger Haney reported that N-120 also works well, and several people have had success with Reloader 7. Randy Robinett (there is no final "e" in Robinett, unless you're talking about the Law & Order guy) has also gotten heroic amounts of H322 to work.

When I started shooting a 30BR in IBS score 10 years ago, I used N130. It worked very well in a Hart 14T and then in a Lilja 17T. I switched to H4198 because N130 was so hard to get and the price went through the roof. H4198 works very well. A few are shooting RL7 and are finding it works great also. There are probably other powders(benchmark) that also work. --Greg

When I started shooting the 30BR I was advised to be sure and try N130 (see Gregs post immediately above) I tried it and saw no apparent advantage and considering it both costs more and is harder to come by I have never had the desire to try it again. There are admittedly several top shooters that swear by it.

Usuns VS. themuns . . .

I don't believe it a versus thing, but rather what you can obtain, and what works in your barrel(s), with your loading techniques/preferences. I have used and experienced competitive results with all of the following: H-4227; RL-7; BenchMark; Tubal 2000 (Magic Powder); H-322; N-130; H-4198. Every barrel I own has shot extremely well with the H-4198; the other numbers have delivered more variable results. Good shootin'! RG

Randy, I have to agree with you...that H4198 is just so consistent from barrel to barrel. It does seem to be the right stuff, tho other powders work ok. I have some RL7 I bought from Pete that I want to try. What is your experience with this ball powder in hot weather? I sure does meter well!! --Greg
