Myford Lathe

Gents,

I may have an oppurtunity to buy a Myford 280 lathe, Imperial, not metric. It's spindle bore will be too small to do any barrel work on (a bit over an inch), which is unfortunate, but the price may be worth it just to have around. Lathes UK gave it high marks, but I was wondering if any of you fellas have had ever run a Myford and if so, what were your thoughts on them.

Thanks,
Justin

Does the one that you are looking at have a quick change gear box? If not, I would probably pass (and given the probable cost, I would anyway, unless I had a specific need that it fit). They have the reputation for being very well made and precise, but for the same price, you can probably find a lathe that you can use for barreling.

Gents,

It's an 11x24 and would have been the bee's knees for barreling if it had a bigger spindle bore, as it is fairly short through the headstock. It is a gear head, and a quick-change gear box. It's got a 5C system with it, to boot.

If I buy it, the price will probably be in the hundreds of dollars range, that's why I'm thinking about it. I already got one lathe, but having another one around wouldn't hurt.

Justin,
That is a larger one than I have seen. I thought you had to have a 1.375 spindle bore to equip it with 5C collets. It is a quality machine.

Butch,

It is some sort of collet chuck affair. The tighten/loosen the collet lever is mounted on the chuck. Never seen one like it...

may just be a collet chuck. always handy to have a spare lathe for incidentals when you got a barrel dialed in.

Myford

I have a super 7 myford which is a 7 x 19 inch lathe. I use it all the time for making screws etc. they have a myriad of attachments for them. As a second lathe they are great. All this said I know nothing about the model you mention.
