Again, like last time, lot's of friendly folk and cheeseburgers this time. But I'll be doggoned again. My little ole' Savage just can't cut the muster. I bedded the stock, put a limbsaver on, even put heat-shrink tubing around the barrel to stifle vibration. Still shooting around 218 or so. Tried Eley ammo on one relay, went down to 185. Flyers all over the place. Woody gave me his rig to try on another relay, and scored 242! Obviously I am going to have to get my hands on a decent rig if I'm going to keep doing this. It looks like no amount of time or money spent on the Savage is going to help.

Where does one get one of these wonder-guns? I figured I'd buy an Anschutz BR, but I'm not sure even that will be enough. Any tips and advice for the noobie?

Go to the classifieds on this site and look at what's available. I would not recommend the Anny.

I would suggest putting the word out for a second hand rimfire BR rifle. This has the advantage that you can buy a known good shooter, and also once you work out what you really want in a BR rifle - you can build a new custom gun from the ground up and on sell your second hand rifle for close to what you had in it. I think it takes a year or so of shooting matches to really know how you want your gear set up as you get exposed to new information and techniques at matches. So going with a SH BR rifle is a reasonably cost effective way to be competitive while you find out what you like best for shooting the match format. You will probably get this done for equal or less cost that an Anchutz, and be better off too.

Good advice from all that's replied. Don't get into a hurry. Talk to those who you are shooting with, some may have rifles they'd part with and let you test drive them. Rifles show up all the time here in the classifieds. There was a Turbo on here, and could still be that looks interesting. As mentioned give Dan Killough a call he has lines on used gear all the time.
Also don't think that by buying a used rifle off someone it couldn't be a big time winner. One just recently sold on here that could hold it's own against the best rifles out there.

One of the shooters at the match sold a very good shooting Suhl on the way home. At least a dozen could have been tried there. You are shooting with a group that has some of the best rifles around.
