I resolve NEVER AGAIN the turn the lathe on backwards on the finishing cut on the inside of the boltface with the meticulously ground hook tool.........

NEVER AGAIN!

Until the next time......

'reet 'reet'reet.......... huhhh..... no chips??

Ohhh, I saved it :) I was about 2 mini-passes from done....... the 'reeet reeetreeet' did work-harden the surface but I was juuuust able to hook it and shave it outta' there! After dismounting and fixing the bit.

Here's what I did. I cut the bolface "inside out" and "backside" which means I run the lathe in reverse and set the feed to cut outward from the face of the bolt on the BACK side where I can see it....... What this does is makes some of my moves backwards from normal so just as I get into the groove and relax I reach out and flip the lathe on (normally, which is backwards) and "REEEET! REEETREEET!"

I actually made up a handle stop which goes on my main drive lever and freakin' BLOCKS it from going the wrong way JUST TO AVOID THIS but this job was "soo small, only 5-6 passes..." that I wung it.

And I paid....

Ha, ha, ha!...Tell me about it, some 20 -25 years ago I did the same while cutting a chamber for a hunting rifle, I reversed the lathe and ruined the edge of the reamer...I left the barrel as it was and ordered an identical reamer which I got within a week...Went back to the shop and finished the chamber but got distracted and lost my concentration and MADE THE SAME MISTAKE AGAIN !!! This is a very common mistake if you do a lot of drilling with your lathe but is not a good excuse.

Man, was I upset with myself !!!

My dad used to tease me: "Men is the only animal who makes the same mistake twice...And you my son seem to be the only man who does it among men"

Regards..
