What is the best muzzle velocity a guy should try to stay around when shooting the 600 yard mark?

Im now playing around with a 129g bullet and im going to set-up the crony tomorrow to see what im at now.

I know you want to stay away from the sound barrier and i think thats 1200 fps or something? is that right? so i definitely want to be over that when i hit the 600 yard target. Am i on the right track?

Using my ballistics program it looks like my muzzle velocity is about 2400 fps and at 600y my velocity is about 1500 fps.

Do I need to get my velocity up more to be more consistent?

Thanks for any info.

IMO, 2400 at the muzzle is way slow. In the 2850 to 3300 range is where most 600 yard shooters run in the 6mm-6.5mm cartridges.

Question?

What are you shooting? 129 grs I am guessing a 6.5 something or other, 2400 fps sounds like a 22 hornet.

1200 fps at 600 would be above the speed of sound about anywhere, but I understand from discussions with my ballistic betters that you really want to be above 1400 or so fps to avoid any of the trauma to the projectile that occurs as the projerctile comes back thru the sound barrier, ie the shock wave attaches itself to the projectile again.

Like I say, Im just going off my ballistics so far I don't have any real data such as a chronograph reading or anything, I will hopefully tonight.

I'm just using my reloading data to guess what my muzzle velocity is and by using my 100,200,300,400 yard targets. Going by where my bullet placement was (my trajectory). Im assuming I have about 2400 fps at the muzzle.

I am shooting a sako 260 with RL-15 and about 34.5g powder with a 129g hornaday bullet.

I will post tomorrow what i find when i fire up the chrony.

Thanks

i couldn't get the chrony to work so i don't have any confirmed data, but I did shoot 5 shots at 600 and shot close to a 3 in group my ballistics chart was right when i used 2400 fps at the muzzle.

Ok, I will work up another load and see if i cant get it to shoot alitttle flatter.

Right now im sitting at:
100y-10.4in high
200y-15.3in high
300y-12.3in high
400y- 0
500y- 23.5in low
600y- 60 in low

is that too much of an arc or not?

about what u figured

according to shoot version3.2 that shows you to have a muzzle velocity of roughly 2465. factory 125's run around 2850 and 140's run about 2750 so you seem to be at least 300 fps slow. a flat 2700 will put you at
100 yds....8.2 high
200 yds....12.36 high
300 yds....9.93 high
400 yds.... 0.0
500 yds....-18.98
600 yds....-49.25

this will leave you with 1645 fps at 600 yds
hope this helps
