My dear centerfire friends:
A very short time ago, (couple years) I made a statement on this forum:
Paraphrazing: One day one will not be competitive in centerfire benchrest without a barrel device, (tuner).
Folks tried to run me off this forum for making such a brash statement.
Today, it ain't "IF" muzzle devices work, (tuners) it's which type works the best.
My dear centerfire friends, we've come a long way....
One day very soon, you will not be able to win in centerfire benchrest, without a muzzle device, (tuner), just like you couldn't win in rimfire benchrest over the last ten years or so, without one.....
At this time, there are two schools of thought about muzzle devices: One is the school that believes the weight at the muzzle needs to be adjustable, during a match, or in testing, to tame different shooting conditions, or loads. In other words, the muzzle device, (tuner), adjusts for the load or conditions.
The other school believes the muzzle device, (tuner) is used to tune the barrel/gun.....then no further adjustment is necessary, no matter what shooting conditions, or load, is used. I have advanced this school of thought and stand behind it....100%
There are "serious" folks, on both sides testing.....
Within three years, possibly four, AT THE OUTSIDE, you will see the first sub tenth, centerfire, 100 yard agg, with a rifle that is equiped with a muzzle device....
Your friend, Bill Calfee
