I shot my first long range match last Sunday (bench rest sillhouttes -- crow-850yds,woodchuck-900yds,bobcat 950yds,and coyote 1000yds) AND HAD A GREAT TIME.
I was suprised to see muzzel brakes on so many rifles; is this normal for these larger caliber guns? I put a 6.5x284 barrel on my panda and it only weighs 10lbs and after a 40 round match I can see the reason.
Is this the norm for 1000yd bench guns?
Are some types better than others?
Any suggestions?
Thanks Dale

Dale,

For some interesting views on brakes in 1k BR, read this thread: http://benchrest.com/showthread.php?69920-1000-yd-Muzzle-Brake-Rule-Change&highlight=brakes

I myself like brakes and have used several diff designs and am currently really impressed by a brake made by Nate Dagley of Straight Shot Gunsmithing, Center ND. I currently have two of his 10* 4 port brakes and am very impressed by the reduced noise and concussion as compared to my std radial hole style brakes.

BUT, I am very interested in hearing more about this BR Sillouettes, that sounds super fun. This is the first I have heard of it. Please provide more info.

** Googled it and found the Ridgeway Rifle Club in PA that does it, wow that looks fun...
