How much distance should there be from the end of the barrel to in side of a muzzle brake? Harrells brakes are threaded about .500 the bore is about.565 deep,I turn the tenion back .555 then take the first few threadsof to close this gap some is this necessary? Second question what type of crown is best used with a brake 11deg or 90deg ? Iam new at this any advice will be appreciated THANKS!!

Usually stop the barrel as soon as you are "into" the brake... it depends on the maker and design.

With a Holland brake you are supposed to stop just before entering the first port.

I prefer a slightly recessed crown. It does not matter that much. No one really sees it.

The threads have anti seize lubricant on them to help prevent back blast carbon build up.

Thanks for the reply,There was a thread about a month ago about exp. chambers Dave Tooley wrote that the int.dim, should be kept as short as possible? I was thinking this is wat he was talking about but Iam not sure. Henry.

I asked the question......

you are talking about. I think what Dave Tooley was implying was in regard to the expansion chamber that some brakes have. The Harrell's brakes don't have an expansion chamber. I have been installing mine the way that you described. I have been leaving a .010 (or less) clearance between the end of the barrel and the bottom of the threaded bore. I also remove the first thread or so to get a nice tight fit to the shoulder since the brake isn't threaded all the way to the bottom of the bore, I then drill (since I don't have chucking reamers) as close as I can to .020 over bullet diameter. It may not be the ideal method, but I have installed three of them without incident. They all have performed better than expected even though expansion chamber brakes are thought to be slightly more effective and more accurate.

Hope this helps,
Med

Yes that's what I was wanting to know,I have also Installed only three in this manner two are doing well the other gun is still waiting on a stock. thanks You can get small chucking reamers at good price at use-enco.com
