Mossberg 817 thumbhole accuracy?

*NEW MODEL* Mossberg 817 thumbhole in 17HMR, accurate?

:)I just laid one away at Grices but can't pick it up until January. It was the last one in stock with the thumbhole stock and folding foregrip so I couldn't wait.
I was curious if anyone had shot this little rifle in 17HMR? I'm hoping it's accurate because at 4.5 lbs it will be a great fall turkey/small game tool but it's a new model and I can't find any reviews on it yet.
I don't want a heavy barrel because this will be a walk around rifle and semi's aren't legal for hunting in PA. I also really like the fold down foregrip because my uncle had a shortbarrel Mossberg with one when I was a kid and I took it 'coon huntin' every time I could. You can pull it so tight into your shoulder with the better foregrip angle that offhand shooting is far more accurate. You can also hold your own light with the same hand; making solo predator hunting much more effective. Wish they would have had the 17HMR when I was a kid.
If this thing shoots then Mossberg better step up the ad campaign because they will be missing the boat on the predator market in which they currently have almost no share.
Anyway, any info will be a big help; good or bad. Thanks!

Mossberg should be ashamed of themselves!

:eek:I finally picked up the 817, scoped it and shot it. What a turd! The bases that came with the rifle could not be aligned without modification. The clip could not be inserted easily. The bolt was ridiculously sticky; had to wiggle it to cycle a round. Fed great but would eject an empty under NO circumstances. Belive it or not, I would and could deal with all that if the gun were a tackdriver. It was not. Every shot was keyholing @ 30yds.
All that was past tense because the good people at Grice gun shop:cool: gave me no problems with a full refund toward a Savage 93R17FSS:D.
That 17HMR is as good as the Mossy was disgusting. The accutrigger breaks clean @ 2.5#, feeds and functions nicely. I can also shoot one hole groups from the same rest, scope, rings and ammo. Now granted it was only 30yds and 3 shots but it was also the same rest: a rolled up bedsheet on the mirror of my GMC. That's all I had time for, roughing in the scope.
Tomorrow I will sight in for a 50yd zero and hopefully get a real 5 shot group @ 100yds off the bags by the weekend.

I have one......

I bought one, but I have not been able to get out and shoot it yet.
The reason I bought it was the research I did, was the opposite of your problems. They others said it was a great gun. One of them worked in a gun department of a sporting goods store, and has access to all of the guns. He choose this one for a lot of reasons. But at any rate, he loves it. He sez it is very accurate. But it needs a scope as there are not front sight. This maybe a problem for some, as the sighting is only as good as the scope and how it is used.
I will get mine out soon and see what I can do with it. Iam glad you got the Savage, as it is reated high also, as well as the Henry.

For what it is worth, this is my input.

48....

I just hope the guy that told you how great the 817 is ain't the same one that sold it to you. At the very least I hope you have much better luck than I did. Do yourself a favor and shoot that thing as soon as possible so if it is a huge turd:mad: like mine was, you can get your money back.
I have owned dozens of new firearms and believe me, that Mossberg is the single worst that I have ever owned, by a wide margin.
I sincerely hope that you have better luck than I did but if you don't; please take it back and let others know because if we settle for junk, that is what we will get. Now more than ever, if a better American made product is available and affordable we should buy it. Good Luck!!!:)

I don't mean to throw salt in your wound here. I just got a Savage 93R17 and I cannot believe how accurate this little dude is. Mine is the wood stocked bull barrel model. I had a Simmons 2-10 WTC laying around and with 17 grain TNT bullets; it's shooting 1.125" 5 shot groups at 100 yards.

Good luck and get the Savage! :D

Talon.....

If you read my previous post from 12/28 you'll see that I allready did that the next day. I got the 93R17FSS; skinny barrel, stainless, synthetic w/Accutrigger. This rifle is not perfect but is a damn sight better than the Mossy and nowhere near as well built as my 541T.
At least I don't feel ripped off with the new Savage; it shoots decent but the fit/finish is sloppy and I thought it was a USA built rifle like the centerfires but its Canadian. Love the trigger! Get this, it shoots decent groups but the barrel appears to be bent:( and if you look down it from the muzzle it has pretty pronounced humps and waves down the OD. You get what you pay for I guess since it was $80 more than the 817 and about $150 less than the Remington.
