more serious rifle

Hey Guys,
I have been shooting and learning about this sport for the past few years. I just love everything about it, I'm captivated by it. I began with a Savage MKII BTVS. I switched the stock out to a SSS Master, mounted a T-36, changed to an after-market trigger, spent the time to adjust a Harrell tuner and purchased a custom single-shot adapter. All that in the quest for rimfire accuracy. I wish that I had known 2 years ago that I would be addicted to this sport...
The good news is that my wife likes this gun so much that she wants it for herself, which puts me in the market for a new rifle. I have been looking for awhile and could use a little feedback. I like older guns. I have been looking at some Anshutz Match 54's, which are reasonably priced used, thinking that I could build on that action in the future.
I need some sage advise. With a modest budget to start what would you look for. Let's keep the gun price around the $750. mark to start as I need a new scope, rest and bag as well.
thanks for the help,tim

serious rifle

If you could get the 54 with the good trigger that would help. or you could find a suhl they already have a good trigger. both would be great.

decr8ter, I bought a Suhl150-1 for 850.00 like all Suhls it had a great trigger. Then I started pricing BR stocks, someone to bed it,an aftermarket barrel,a smith to install it,then I found my current Suhl150 BR gun in the classifides here on BRC. it cost a little more than the 750.00 you quoted but way less than trying to build one up. The man I bought my gun from gave me a 4 day trial period if I didn't like it he would have taken it back and returned my money, now not everyone does this but some do. I smile everytime I take it to the shoot.

b/r rifle

i saw that too. best thing to do is be patient i think the best rifles become available here and there are some gents that lurk here that wont steer you wrong.

going to be pretty hard to get a competitive rifle for 750.00 though.

suhl 150

just checked our classifed there is a suhl 150 recent build and smithed by bill myers one of the top smiths. it has the tuner scope great bedding new stock new barrell 2100.00 im not that far with mine with no smith work as yet or a new barrell.

lets see

800.00 rifle
250.00 stock don stith
250.00 to bed it
350.00 scope
150.00 tuner
200.00 new barrell

2150.00 not counting smith work. if you want to win this rifle would probably do that but of course lots of practice time and ammo cost to get there.

Hey all,
Thanks for all of the good input. I have been trying to do my homework for the past year or so, so I realize what you all are saying is the truth. This is not a cheap sport. I tried to back into it by starting with the Savage...but as I began to get hooked I just continued to tweak that rifle. I have always known that it wouldn't be competitive, but it was my "trial gun". We all know that story.
So back to my original question. I need a platform to start from. I have the Suhl in mind (butt-ugly as it is), but need to know which of the older Anschutz models that would have the best trigger/barrel/bolt assembly just as is. I thought the Match 54....am I wrong? I can get one of those for @ 750.00. Like my Savage I would like to add something new every few months until I have a great rifle...but need to start with a solid base.
Any comments are really appreciated. Thanks again for your help, Tim

Sounds like you have your mind made up but I'll take one swipe at this to give you another opinion. Anchutz 54 actions are fine and they can be had with a good trigger. You will have to pay more to have it rebarreled and if the trigger messes up, look at a lot of money. The action must meet a minimum standard and there are several that do. Beyond that you are looking at the cost of the components that attach to it. If you start with a 40X, usually cheaper to start with, and you have a threaded action and available jewell trigger. Stocks are easy to come by because of volumn and most anyone can work on one. The end result will be the least expensive competitive gun and you have not given up a thing along the way getting there.

Hi Don,
I have been looking for a 40x, but can't find one to save my life. I have checked regularly on Gun Broker...always zip. I had given up on the 40x, but if you could steer me in the right direction I would buy one in a heartbeat.
Thanks for the help, t.

Have you called Gene Davis? He has purchased them for years to make bench guns out of and had some a while back. Keep an eye out on the classifieds here too. The going rate used to be about 600$ for an action. Everything else is a throw away. If a used bench gun were listed on the classifieds, just add up the cost of components to see if the price is fair. No matter what is said, I assume the barrel is shot and that it will require a barrel and, at that point, you have effectively a new gun.

Don,
Thanks again, I'll get ahold of Gene and see what he can do. I see on my list of the 08 ARA winners that the winner was Bob Barnhart with a 40X, Jewell trigger, benchmark bbl, and a 'factory' stock..so all may not be throw-away.
I just need to find one intact to begin with. t.

I know Gene has a factory stock. I bought one from him last year to have in case I wanted to try prone. He said he had a room full. I wouldn't bet on Bob's gun being in a factory stock. That may have been a mistake on the list.

Don,
Just wrote to Gene, thanks again. That may have been a typo, but here are some others who had factory stocks as well....#8 Marvin Batliner, #31 Wayne Knutzen, #49 John Coepfil, and#81 Travis Caldwell. Not a bad turnout for Remington. The higher ratings all had Jewell triggers and #47 Don Nichols had a Remington trigger ( the only one).
It's a nice list to cross-reference components. Like I said, I've been doing my homework. I plan on shooting at the state level in the next two years and at the Nationals after that. I tend to get a little obsessed...
Thanks again Don, tim

Remington put the 40XRBR's into "Remington green" McMillan benchrest stocks. I know several folks who have those stocks on their rifles.
